H2O: The Intelligence of Water, released to streaming in April 2025, is marketed on this premise:
The film looks at water not just as a basic resource, but as a living element that can capture positive and negative energy, respond to human emotions, and store or process information.
We have not seen the film. Everything below responds to the claims as marketed — by the distributor's press release, the IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes synopsis, and material a reader sent us. Nothing here describes what the film argues or is attributed to anyone appearing in it; where we quote Gerald Pollack or Veda Austin, we quote what they publish under their own names. We are also not citing an IMDb user score: two different unverified figures reached us, 5.6/10 and 5.0/10, and the page would not load for us to check.
What can be assessed is the science the marketing invokes — "EZ water", water that "moves more efficiently into cells" — because that is the sales language of a real market in drinking-water hardware.
The exclusion zone is real, and we are not going to pretend otherwise
Gerald Pollack's laboratory page at the University of Washington describes solutes being "profoundly excluded from the vicinity of hydrophilic surfaces, to distances up to several hundred micrometers". That phenomenon is not fringe. A 2020 critical review in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences by Elton, Spencer, Riches and Williams concedes the observation up front: the exclusion zone "has now been independently demonstrated by several groups", at "500+ µm" near the plastic membrane Nafion and far less near metals (72 µm near tungsten).
Hold on to the units: micrometres, at an interface, in a dish.
The claim departs from the evidence at the next step: that the zone is a distinct crystalline phase. Pollack's page calls it "a physically distinct, ordered phase of water. It is much like a liquid crystal", charged opposite to the water beyond it and built by energy that "comes from light". The review rejects that account on three grounds. Quantum chemistry finds the proposed hexagonal H₃O₂ sheets unstable, the authors citing Hasted's point that "high energy cost of placing hydrogens between oxygens was enough to make such structures explode". Neutron radiography found no density difference near Nafion, against the roughly 10% increase the structure predicts. And the birefringence offered as evidence of crystalline ordering was contaminated by optical reflection artifacts. The explanation the reviewers prefer, Schurr's diffusiophoresis, needs no new phase at all — just ion concentration gradients.
Timothy Schmidt, a professor of chemistry at UNSW, gives the physical objection in one line: hydrogen bonds in liquid water at room temperature "only last millionths of a millionth of a second", so "any structure in EZ water would dissipate very quickly. In bulk, water has forgotten its neighbours within picoseconds."
None of this makes Pollack a fraud, and we are not calling him one. His experiments are published and partly replicated, and his own page is careful where the marketing is not: the lab "hypothesiz[es]" that "proper hydration is a central feature of function, and therefore of health". Credit that caveat, then note the reviewers on the same ground: "the hypothesis that cellular water undergoes significant restructuring remains very controversial."
The information claim was tested, and it failed
That water holds and transmits information is the load-bearing claim, and unlike the exclusion zone it has a test history.
It reached Nature in 1988, when Davenas and twelve co-authors including Jacques Benveniste published "Human basophil degranulation triggered by very dilute antiserum against IgE". That paper is paywalled to us, so we will not characterise its methods. What is public is Nature's follow-up standfirst a month later: "The now celebrated report by Dr J. Benveniste and colleagues elsewhere is found, by a visiting Nature team, to be an insubstantial basis for the claims made for them." The team the journal sent to the laboratory included the fraud investigator Walter Stewart and the magician James Randi. The rest of their report is paywalled, and we are not summarising from memory what we could not read.
The strongest positive result available to us, Radin, Hayssen, Emoto and Kizu (Explore, 2006), deserves stating properly. Roughly 2,000 people in Tokyo directed positive intention at water samples held in an electromagnetically shielded room in California, without knowing about control samples elsewhere; ice crystals from both sets were "blindly identified and photographed by an analyst" and the photographs "blindly assessed for aesthetic appeal by 100 independent judges". Treated crystals scored higher, "P = .001, one-tailed". PubMed indexes it as a randomised controlled trial.
Now the caveats, some of them the authors' own. The abstract calls it a pilot. The outcome measured is how attractive judges found photographs — a subjective rating, not a physical property of water and nothing like a clinical endpoint. The test was one-tailed. The authors are the proponents: Dean Radin of the Institute of Noetic Sciences and Masaru Emoto, whose hypothesis it is. No independent replication appears in our sources.
The informal check we have runs the other way. When the journalist Carrie Poppy recreated Emoto's rice demonstration in 2014 — four labelled jars, thirty days, matching daily verbal treatment — all four decayed near-identically and the neglected jar stayed healthiest, the opposite of the prediction. Four jars and one journalist is a demonstration, not a study.
The imagery persuades for a reason too. As the retired Simon Fraser University chemist Stephen Lower notes on his self-published page, those star-shaped pictures are ice crystals, not liquid water, and "convey no information about the water" — crystal shape "highly depend[s] on the conditions and rates of freezing".
Follow the micrometre to the checkout
Veda Austin, featured in the film's publicity, describes herself on her own site as a "New Zealand water researcher, author, artist and mother of three" with "well over 10,000 evidential images of water co-creating with consciousness". Her page lists no formal scientific training — an absence on the page, not a claim about what she has.
Downstream sits the money. Natural Action, which sells under-sink "drinking water revitalizers" and whole-home structuring systems, runs a page built around Austin's work by name, claiming structured water "moves more efficiently into cells" and delivers "cellular hydration", "energy production" and "detoxification". Nothing in our sources connects the filmmakers to that retailer; the point is the vocabulary. A hypothesis about micrometre-scale layers beside a plastic membrane has become a plumbing fixture that detoxifies you.
No randomised human trial of structured water was located for this piece. Healthline, a medically reviewed consumer summary rather than a systematic review, reports "there aren't any high quality human studies that support the many health-related claims made about structured water". Schmidt is blunter: "it is not possible to buy any other type of water than regular water. You can change the pH, you can change the dissolved ions and gases, but not the water itself."
The round number, and the part that is true
The press release says humans "are composed of 70% water". The USGS puts adults at "up to 60%" — about 60% in men, 55% in women, 78% in newborns. The 73% figure belongs to the brain and heart, not the body, so the round number is an organ figure promoted to a whole-body one, off by roughly ten points for a man and fifteen for a woman. The companion line that "Earth is 70% water" we did not check and make no claim about.
The conservation message, though, is the part with hard numbers behind it. WHO reports that in 2022 six billion people used safely managed drinking-water services, leaving 2.2 billion without them; about one million people are estimated to die each year from diarrhoea linked to unsafe water, sanitation and hand hygiene; 395,000 deaths of children under five could be avoided each year; over two billion people live in water-stressed countries. On this, a film urging you to care about water is simply right.
Which makes the trade worth naming. The one published review we located — Kent Hill in Film Threat, 7/10, the sole critic review on file at Rotten Tomatoes — allowed that "there are elements some viewers might roll their eyes at", then framed that scepticism as the reason environmental documentaries struggle. It is the other way round: documented scarcity is being used to buy credit for claims that cannot survive a blind.
Why E and not D
D is for a claim built on real findings and pushed past them, and part of this one qualifies. Taken alone, "EZ water is a fourth phase of water inside your cells" would grade C or D — the exclusion zone is real, its structural interpretation is unsupported, and cellular restructuring "remains very controversial".
But the claim as submitted rests on water storing information and responding to human emotion, and that is not an over-extension. It is a hypothesis that was tested and failed, requiring a mechanism ordinary measurement rules out. Anyone weighing this documentary, or a device sold in its vocabulary, should know the central claim is contradicted, not merely unproven.
