            &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;On 28 August 2026, &lt;em&gt;The Times&lt;/em&gt; published Michael Odell's first-person account of four weeks on
"the reset," a programme by the nutritionist Rose Ferguson, sold alongside her book:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The diet that changed my life in four weeks. I feel 10 years younger. What happened when
Michael Odell, 62, tried a gut reset with Rose Ferguson, leading nutritionist and David
Beckham's diet guru&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;By the end he sleeps better, has more energy and is less irritable, and there is no reason to doubt
it. What is graded here is not whether he felt better, but the explanation he is given for why:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;She recommends a complete reboot of my biome and metabolism&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/blockquote&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;"Your digestion can become exhausted if it's overworked and not used to being flexible"&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/blockquote&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;"Your body is doing a deep-clean. It's a process called autophagy, which means old or damaged
cellular material is being recycled."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Three mechanisms: a rebooted microbiome, a rested digestion, a week-two autophagy deep-clean. They
are the intellectual content of the product, and the parts the evidence will not carry.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Sixteen changes, no measurement&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Week one: no alcohol, a 12-hour eating window, a 10pm bedtime, morning daylight, and ten minutes of
meditation, journalling, movement and breathwork. Week two adds 18:6 fasting, a liquid-only day, a
daily tablespoon of fermented food, a step target, two strength sessions, and the removal of eggs,
nightshades, dairy, gluten, added sugar, sweeteners, dried fruit and refined seed oils. Week three
reintroduces those foods 48 hours apart; week four settles back to 12:12.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That is more than a dozen simultaneous interventions in one person, with no control, no blinding,
and &lt;strong&gt;no measurement of any kind&lt;/strong&gt; — no weight, no bloods, no stool sample — in a subject told in
advance that he will feel ten years younger. Several of the changes would improve a 62-year-old's
sleep and energy on their own: stopping drinking, an earlier bedtime, daylight, walking, strength
training, more vegetables, fewer ultra-processed foods. All are defensible; none is what the reader
is told is responsible. The one thing an uncontrolled n=1 with sixteen variables cannot tell you is
which variable worked.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The reboot reverts in two days&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;David and colleagues, in &lt;em&gt;Nature&lt;/em&gt; in 2014, put ten adults on five days of an entirely animal-based
or entirely plant-based diet. Community structure shifted within a day of the food reaching the
distal gut — diet really does move the microbiome, fast. Then: &lt;em&gt;"Subjects' gut microbiota reverted
to their original structure 2 days after the animal-based diet ended."&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The microbiome tracks what you are eating now, so a change to it lasts as long as the eating does.
Alpha-diversity did not significantly change on &lt;em&gt;either&lt;/em&gt; diet. Ten people is a small study, but it
is the direct answer to a durability claim, and it points the other way.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Fermented food is the good part, at eight times the dose&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Wastyk and colleagues, in &lt;em&gt;Cell&lt;/em&gt; in 2021, ran a 17-week protocol in healthy adults (mean age 51)
with a 10-week diet intervention; 39 assigned, final analysis &lt;strong&gt;n=18 per arm&lt;/strong&gt;. The fermented-food
arm showed steadily increasing microbiota diversity and a significant decrease in 19 inflammatory
serum markers, including IL-6. That is real randomised evidence, and Ferguson is entitled to it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Three caveats travel with it. The &lt;strong&gt;primary outcome, a cytokine response score, was not significant
in either arm&lt;/strong&gt;; the diversity and inflammation results are secondary and exploratory, as the
authors state. The dose reached &lt;strong&gt;6.3 ± 2.9 servings a day&lt;/strong&gt;, from 0.4 at baseline; the reset asks
for a tablespoon. And the fermented arm reported significantly &lt;em&gt;more&lt;/em&gt; bloating during ramp-up, which
later resolved. The trial's high-fibre arm roughly doubled fibre intake and its diversity &lt;strong&gt;did
not&lt;/strong&gt; change.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;An exhausted digestion, and a deep-clean nobody measured&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;No source is offered for digestion becoming "exhausted" and needing rest, and none was assessed
here — it is a metaphor, not a claim with a literature. What can be tested is the implied payoff,
that compressing &lt;em&gt;when&lt;/em&gt; you eat delivers a metabolic benefit. Lowe and colleagues, in &lt;em&gt;JAMA
Internal Medicine&lt;/em&gt; in 2020, randomised &lt;strong&gt;116&lt;/strong&gt; adults to 16:8 time-restricted eating or three
structured meals a day for &lt;strong&gt;12 weeks&lt;/strong&gt;. Weight loss was 0.94 kg against 0.68 kg, &lt;strong&gt;no significant
difference (p=0.63)&lt;/strong&gt;, and none in fat mass, fasting glucose, insulin, HbA1c or lipids either.
Their conclusion: &lt;em&gt;"Time-restricted eating, in the absence of other interventions, is not more
effective in weight loss than eating throughout the day."&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That is not a finding of harm, and it tested 16:8 for twelve weeks, not one week of 18:6. But one
result deserves an older reader's attention: appendicular lean mass index fell significantly in the
fasting arm (between-group difference −0.16 kg/m², p=0.005), and roughly &lt;strong&gt;65% of the weight lost
was fat-free mass&lt;/strong&gt;, against an expected 20 to 30%. The authors could not rule out low protein
intake as the cause, having not measured it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Then the deep-clean. Autophagy is real and Nobel-recognised; the claim being graded is that it
switched on in this man in week two. The best human evidence is Bensalem and colleagues in the
&lt;em&gt;Journal of Physiology&lt;/em&gt; in 2025, whose abstract concedes the point: &lt;em&gt;"Autophagy slows age-related
pathologies and is stimulated by nutrient restriction in animal studies. However, this has never
been shown in humans."&lt;/em&gt; Their prespecified exploratory sub-study covered &lt;strong&gt;121&lt;/strong&gt; adults with
obesity, mean age 58, over &lt;strong&gt;six months&lt;/strong&gt;, using a blood assay they had to build because no method
existed, and a fasting arm far more severe than a week of 18:6. At two months, no significant
between-group difference; at six, one between fasting and standard care at &lt;strong&gt;P = 0.04, post hoc&lt;/strong&gt;.
Their summary: &lt;em&gt;"there was no significant increase from baseline within the iTRE group, showing that
although autophagy may be modified by nutrient restriction in humans, further studies are
required."&lt;/em&gt; Nothing was measured in Odell's week two at all.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Removing four food groups on a magazine's advice&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The elimination-and-reintroduction phase makes the reader their own unblinded diagnostician. The
British Dietetic Association says such restriction &lt;em&gt;"may increase the risk of nutritional
deficiencies, especially without support from a qualified healthcare professional,"&lt;/em&gt; that
elimination and reintroduction should be supervised by a registered dietitian, and that excluding
wheat and dairy is &lt;em&gt;"unnecessary and potentially harmful"&lt;/em&gt; when the nutrients are not replaced. It
also limits juices and smoothies to 150 ml a day because of free sugars — awkward for a liquid-only
day.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;On nightshades, Colorado State University's Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center is blunt: &lt;em&gt;"There is no
conclusive research that draws the link between nightshade consumption and increased
inflammation."&lt;/em&gt; The Cleveland Clinic agrees, endorsing supervised trial elimination only for people
with inflammatory or autoimmune conditions — not for a healthy 62-year-old dropping tomatoes because
a book said to. Nor can the reintroduction test work as advertised: a man just told these foods are
suspect, eating them back one at a time and logging how he feels, cannot distinguish an intolerance
from an expectation.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;What the article gets right&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Its most checkable claim checks out. The piece says the UK chief medical officer "earlier this year
published further evidence that even the smallest movements can deliver significant physical and
mental benefits." The refreshed UK CMO guidelines were published on 10 July 2026, emphasising
light-intensity activity, less prolonged sitting, and strength and balance work; Chris Whitty is
quoted saying &lt;em&gt;"even small amounts of physical activity produce important benefits compared to
none."&lt;/em&gt; The article misspells his surname and calls guidance "evidence," but the substance is right
— and the reset's own prescription meets the guidelines' 150 minutes a week plus strength work on
two days.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Ferguson's closing advice is the best thing in the piece, and it quietly contradicts the framing:
permanent habits, three meals, more plants, don't underfuel, and &lt;em&gt;"Consistency beats intensity. If
you eat ice cream or drink a bottle of wine, that's OK. It's not a competition."&lt;/em&gt; That is the
opposite of a reset, and the part that would hold up.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;None of this assesses Rose Ferguson's competence — her training was not verified either way here,
and nothing above depends on it. The point is structural. Per the BDA,
&lt;em&gt;"Dietitians are the only nutrition profession with statutory (legal) regulation,"&lt;/em&gt; while
"nutritionist" is &lt;em&gt;"not legally or voluntary regulated"&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;"anyone could use"&lt;/em&gt; the title. So
"leading nutritionist" is a description a newspaper chose, not a credential a regulator granted.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Why this is a D&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Not an E. The instructions are largely good, several claims in the piece are correct, and a reader
who follows the programme will probably feel better. The article is not lying about that.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Not a C either, because the evidence on the central question is not split. That question is
attribution. The microbiome reboot reverts in two days. The exhausted digestion has no source, and a
compressed eating window showed no metabolic advantage in a 116-person trial. The deep-clean was
never measured, and has never been shown from baseline even in a six-month study built to measure
it. Meanwhile everything plausibly producing the effect — no alcohol, more sleep, more steps,
strength work, fewer ultra-processed foods, morning daylight — is bundled in and credited to the
brand. A real set of improvements, framed to produce a false impression about their cause. That is
a D.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The body:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Those consuming walnuts five or more times per week had an estimated 1.8 additional years
of life expectancy for women and 1.9 years for men at age 60. That same group saw their
mortality risk reduced by 14% during the study's follow up period.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Nothing in that paragraph is invented. Both numbers exist in the published record — but they
come from two different versions of the same analysis, one of which the researchers revised
downward before it passed peer review.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The paper trail&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The peer-reviewed source is Liu and colleagues in &lt;em&gt;Nutrients&lt;/em&gt; in 2021: 67,014 women from the
Nurses' Health Study and 26,326 men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, free of
cancer, heart disease and stroke at baseline, followed from 1998 to 2018. That is 93,340
people, up to 20 years, 30,263 deaths.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The findings are solid, and worth stating first. Against people who ate no walnuts, total
mortality hazard ratios ran 0.95 for less than one serving a week, 0.94 for one, 0.87 for
two to four, and 0.86 for five or more, p for trend below 0.0001 — a monotonic dose–response
in a large, carefully conducted cohort. The headline's 14% is exactly what a hazard ratio of
0.86 means, correctly converted and attributed.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The life-expectancy figures are not from that paper, which estimates a greater life
expectancy at age 60 of &lt;strong&gt;1.30 years in women and 1.26 years in men&lt;/strong&gt; for the top intake
group. The 1.78 and 1.94 years Super Age rounds to "1.8" and "1.9" come from a 2020
conference abstract in &lt;em&gt;Current Developments in Nutrition&lt;/em&gt; — an earlier cut of the same
analysis, presented at a scientific meeting, not peer-reviewed. Once you know that, the rest
of the paragraph resolves too. The abstract's cohort was 68,308 women plus 26,760 men, or
95,068 — Super Age's "more than 95,000" — with "up to 18 years of follow-up," Super Age's
"18-year prospective study." The published paper says 93,340 and 20 years.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So the paragraph is a chimera: sample size, follow-up length and life-expectancy gain from
the pre-review abstract, mortality percentage from the peer-reviewed paper that replaced it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What changed between the two versions is the point.&lt;/strong&gt; The abstract reported a hazard ratio
of 0.77 for five or more servings a week — a 23% reduction. The published paper reports
0.86, a 14% reduction. The effect estimate lost nine percentage points and the
life-expectancy gain fell from 1.78/1.94 years to 1.30/1.26. Quoting the pre-review
life-expectancy figure next to the post-review mortality figure overstates the longevity
benefit by roughly 37% for women and 54% for men. Both are real; they cannot both describe
the same analysis.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There is also the verb. This is an observational cohort; people who eat walnuts five times a
week differ from people who eat none in ways no adjustment fully captures, so "cuts" is a
causal claim the design cannot support. To its credit, the piece says as much further down —
the findings "don't prove that walnuts themselves extend lifespan because the study was
observational." That caveat is correct, and it sits under a headline that contradicts it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The cognitive half&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;On the headline's second promise, the omission matters more than the arithmetic.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The largest and longest trial ever run on exactly this question is the WAHA study, published
by Sala-Vila and colleagues in the &lt;em&gt;American Journal of Clinical Nutrition&lt;/em&gt; in 2020. It
randomised 708 cognitively healthy people aged 63–79 in Barcelona and Loma Linda to 30–60 g
of walnuts a day or none, for two years, with 90% retention and compliance confirmed by
red-blood-cell fatty acid measurement. The primary outcome, two-year change in a global
cognition composite, was −0.072 in the walnut group and −0.086 in controls, &lt;strong&gt;P = 0.491&lt;/strong&gt;,
with no differences in memory, language, perception or frontal function. The authors' own
summary: &lt;em&gt;"Walnut supplementation for 2 y had no effect on cognition in healthy elders."&lt;/em&gt; A
post-hoc analysis found a benefit at the Barcelona site only, which they immediately
qualified — &lt;em&gt;"This finding should be considered exploratory and needs to be confirmed,
because the trial was not originally designed to examine outcomes in subgroups"&lt;/em&gt; — so we
will not extrapolate from it either.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In fairness: the California Walnut Commission funded that trial through its authors'
institutions, and it reported a null result anyway. Industry funding is a reason to read
carefully, not a verdict.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Instead of the trial, the piece cites "one meta-analysis" of six studies in which five found
a positive association. The source is Theodore and colleagues in &lt;em&gt;Advances in Nutrition&lt;/em&gt; in
2021, and it is not a meta-analysis: because of heterogeneity across designs and outcomes,
&lt;em&gt;"a meta-analysis of study results was not possible, therefore this review focuses on a
narrative synthesis."&lt;/em&gt; The walnut sentence is
paraphrased accurately, but the review's own conclusion for nuts generally is &lt;em&gt;"inconsistent
evidence that the regular consumption of mixed nuts has a protective effect on cognition"&lt;/em&gt;;
only 11 of its 22 studies were rated high quality, and 10 of 22 were funded by the nut
industry or run by authors who had taken nut-industry funds. The two walnut randomised
trials it counts are WAHA — null on its primary endpoint — and a crossover in 47 college
students where walnuts improved one of three measures. It also includes a study of 15,467
nurses aged 70 and over followed for six years that found no association on any cognitive
measure.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The piece also describes a "2020 study published in the journal &lt;em&gt;Nutrients&lt;/em&gt;" showing walnuts
reduce oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. That is Chauhan and Chauhan, a narrative
review rather than a study, whose primary findings come from a transgenic Alzheimer's mouse
model and an in-vitro experiment with synthetic amyloid-beta, and whose language is
conditional throughout — walnuts &lt;em&gt;"may improve cognition."&lt;/em&gt; Mice and a test tube have been
promoted to human evidence.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;What the piece gets right&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The heart section is accurate. Guasch-Ferré and colleagues pooled 26 controlled trials with
1,059 participants and found walnuts lowered total cholesterol by 6.99 mg/dL and LDL by
5.51 mg/dL versus control, with no meaningful change in body weight or blood pressure. Real,
consistent, small — and largely a &lt;em&gt;replacement&lt;/em&gt; effect: reductions were biggest when the
comparator was a typical Western diet (total cholesterol −12.30 mg/dL), walnuts displacing
saturated fat and refined carbohydrate rather than added on top. Only 9 of the 26 trials met
the authors' own quality threshold.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The endothelial and gut findings are reported accurately but are biomarkers, not health
outcomes. Hsu and colleagues found walnuts improved flow-mediated dilation by 0.94% across
six trials and 250 participants, with no effect on three other markers and a confidence
interval nearly touching zero; their own hedge is that &lt;em&gt;"further studies should be performed
on adults to determine the effect of walnut intake on endothelial function."&lt;/em&gt; Holscher and
colleagues fed 18 people 42 g of walnuts a day for three weeks and saw several bacterial
genera rise — and also saw &lt;em&gt;Ruminococcus&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Dorea&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Oscillospira&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Bifidobacterium&lt;/em&gt;
fall by 16–38%, which the piece does not mention. Nobody measured whether that shift matters,
so we are not calling it harmful either. The paper says only that the microbiota &lt;em&gt;"may
contribute to the underlying mechanisms."&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The piece also gives its fibre figure per cup — roughly four servings — while its advice is
a small handful. We did not verify a per-cup figure and offer no corrected number; the two
sentences are simply measured in different units.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The grade&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;D — Misleading.&lt;/strong&gt; Not E, because nothing here is contradicted by the evidence: the 14% is
arithmetically correct, the cohort is real and well conducted, the lipid findings are
accurate, and the piece includes an honest observational caveat. Not C, because the evidence
on these points is not genuinely split — the errors run one way. A causal verb for an
observational result. Life-expectancy and cohort-size figures from a superseded abstract
whose effect estimate the peer-reviewed paper cut by nine points. A narrative review called
a meta-analysis. Mouse and in-vitro work presented as a human study. And the biggest,
longest randomised trial of the exact claim in the headline — industry-funded, and null —
sitting unmentioned inside one of the reviews the piece cites.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Marion Nestle, who flagged the 2021 paper's walnut-industry disclosure, is not an
anti-walnut voice; her bottom line is &lt;em&gt;"eat whatever nuts you like."&lt;/em&gt; That is roughly where
the evidence leaves this. Walnuts modestly improve your cholesterol, and people who eat them
regularly die somewhat less often than people who don't. What is not supported is two extra
years of life, or a cognitive benefit in healthy older adults — the one trial designed to
find that looked hard and found nothing.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

characterisation of what is said in it. If the audio makes different claims, they are
outside this piece.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The caption makes three separate assertions, and they fail in three different ways. One is
largely right, one is contradicted by direct measurement, and one takes a real
dermatological phenomenon and re-points it at the wrong dose, the wrong mechanism and the
wrong disease.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;What the caption gets right&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Spinach is a strong source of vitamin A, and the piece deserves credit for it. The NIH
Office of Dietary Supplements vitamin A fact sheet lists half a cup of boiled frozen
spinach at &lt;strong&gt;573 mcg RAE, 64% of the Daily Value&lt;/strong&gt; — second only to baked sweet potato on
its food table. That figure is already adjusted for the fact that plants supply provitamin
A carotenoids rather than retinol: one mcg RAE equals "1 mcg retinol, 2 mcg supplemental
beta-carotene, 12 mcg dietary beta-carotene." ODS notes the body absorbs "up to 75% to
100% of retinol and, in most cases, 10% to 30% of beta-carotene from foods," and that
"cooking and heat treatment can increase the bioavailability of beta-carotene."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The iron claim is correct with a caveat. Per the ODS iron fact sheet, "plants and
iron-fortified foods contain nonheme iron only," and "heme iron has better bioavailability
than nonheme iron." How much spinach iron you actually absorb depends on what you eat with
it — ODS names ascorbic acid and phytate as the modifiers. That is a real caveat, not a
rebuttal.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The vitamin C claim was &lt;strong&gt;not assessed&lt;/strong&gt;. No source consulted for this piece gives
spinach's vitamin C content, so we take no position on it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;"Spinach is high in iodine" is false&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This is the load-bearing sentence, and it is the one the measurement data contradict.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The USDA, FDA and ODS-NIH Database for the Iodine Content of Common Foods gives the

quarter-teaspoon of iodized salt, 78 mcg. A cup of whole milk, 82 mcg. One hard-boiled
egg, 31 mcg. &lt;strong&gt;Three cups of raw spinach contain about a fifth of the iodine in a single
egg, and about a fourteenth of what is in a cup of milk.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;These are pooled analytical samples with small counts — 27 for raw, 8 for boiled — and the
spread on raw spinach is wide, which fits what the ODS iodine fact sheet says about soil:
"Most fruits and vegetables are poor sources of iodine, and the amounts they contain are
affected by the iodine content of the soil, fertilizer use, and irrigation practices."
Spinach does not appear in that fact sheet's food table at all. Even the single highest
raw-spinach sample in the database, 36 mcg per 90 g, is under half a cup of milk.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Some arithmetic, shown rather than asserted — this is our calculation from the USDA and
ODS figures, not a number either source publishes. The adult iodine RDA is 150 mcg/day and
the Tolerable Upper Intake Level for adults is 1,100 mcg/day. At 6.0 mcg per 90 g, hitting
the RDA takes roughly 2.25 kg of raw spinach; reaching the UL takes about 16.5 kg, on the
order of 550 cups a day. Use the highest sample ever recorded instead of the mean and the
UL still needs about 2.75 kg, roughly 90 cups. Three cups supply 4% of the RDA. ODS puts
it plainly: "In most people, iodine intakes from foods and supplements are unlikely to
exceed the UL."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;One thing we did not use: several consumer pages quote tidy per-100 g iodine figures for
spinach that sit close to the USDA values. They carry no attribution, so we dropped them,
even though they would have supported the same conclusion.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Iodine and skin: real, but not this&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Iodine does cause skin reactions. Saying otherwise would be wrong, and the caption is not
inventing the phenomenon from nothing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Dermatologist F. William Danby, writing in the &lt;em&gt;Journal of the American Academy of
Dermatology&lt;/em&gt; in 2007, concedes it directly: "Kelp is recognized as causing an acneiform
eruption where the iodide source is indeed high, and there is little doubt that a papular
and papulopustular acneiform eruption can be triggered by halides." DermNet NZ's page on
halogenodermas lists the causes: iodine antiseptics on broken skin, potassium iodide,
expectorants, multivitamins and tonics, amiodarone, radiocontrast media, and — the only
dietary entry — "high-iodine containing foods such as seaweed, seafood and iodised salt,
with rare cases of iododerma reported following prolonged and excessive ingestion." No
vegetable appears. DermNet also notes it generally takes months of continuous exposure.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What that looks like in practice is documented in a 2022 case report — a single case, the
weakest design cited here, and worth labelling as such. A 40-year-old man took
muscle-building supplements containing iodide and bromide for four months, then developed
crusted papules and nodules on his face, neck and trunk with low-grade fever. Biopsy
showed intraepidermal abscesses and dense neutrophil infiltrates; the authors propose a
type 2 delayed hypersensitivity reaction. It cleared after he stopped the supplements. No
dose threshold is given. It bears no resemblance to a few extra blemishes after eating
salad.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The caption's mechanism is also inverted. DermNet's proposed pathway is that "excretion of
halogen via sweat or oil glands may result in an inflammatory reaction in the skin." The
oil gland is the &lt;em&gt;exit route&lt;/em&gt;, and the outcome is inflammation. Nothing in these sources
says iodine makes the gland produce more sebum, which is what "overstimulate your oil
glands" means.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And the disease is different. Danby's central distinction is exactly the one the caption
collapses: "but the hallmark of acne, the comedo, is not part of the initial lesion in
this picture. Comedones may appear as secondary lesions." His conclusion: &lt;strong&gt;"To summarize,
there is no evidence to support iodides as a cause of comedonal acne."&lt;/strong&gt; The clogged pore
the caption names is the thing the literature says iodide does not produce.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Where our own case is weak&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Danby's piece is a letter, not a study, and he says so about the gap: "The definitive work
needed to answer the question would be a blinded trial of a very high iodide diet in a
teenaged or young twenties population. I suspect it would be a significant challenge to
obtain ethics approval, let alone volunteers, for such a study." There is no trial
disproving dietary iodine as an acne cause. His own dose illustration gives the scale:
matching a 750 mg/day therapeutic dose of potassium iodide would take 1,140 litres of milk
a day.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The 2024 American Academy of Dermatology acne guidelines — a GRADE systematic review — do
not help either way. Their diet question covers low-glycemic-load, low-dairy, low-whey,
omega-3 and chocolate. &lt;strong&gt;Iodine is not among the exposures evaluated at all.&lt;/strong&gt; That is an
absence of consideration, not a clearance. On what they did assess: "Available evidence is
conflicting on low-glycemic-load diet for acne treatment," and "Available evidence is
insufficient to develop a recommendation on the use of low dairy diet, low whey diet,
omega-3 fatty acids, and chocolate on acne treatment." Four low-glycemic-load trials are
listed, three favourable and one null, and the guideline names dietary interventions for
acne as an explicit evidence gap.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There is also a 1961 &lt;em&gt;Archives of Dermatology&lt;/em&gt; paper, Hitch and Greenburg's "Adolescent
acne and dietary iodine," which both sides of this argument lean on. &lt;strong&gt;We could not read
it&lt;/strong&gt; — only the PubMed record, which carries no abstract. Confident conclusions are
circulated from it at second hand; we could not verify them, so none of them appear above.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Why E and not D&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;D is for a claim that is not technically false but framed to mislead — a real finding
pushed past what it shows. That grade is tempting here, because the halide literature is
genuinely real and the vitamin A claim is genuinely right. But the sentence that carries
the argument is not a stretched finding. "Spinach is also high in iodine" is contradicted
by direct measurement, and once it goes, nothing links iododerma to a bowl of leaves.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Not C either. C is for genuinely split evidence, and there is no split on spinach's iodine
content — it is measured, and it is low. Whether diet affects acne at all is a live
question, as the AAD guideline shows. That is a different question, and this claim does
not get to borrow its uncertainty.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Eat the spinach. If your skin is changing, this is not the reason — and what to do about
acne is a question for a clinician, not for this piece.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

premise:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The film looks at water not just as a basic resource, but as a living element that can
capture positive and negative energy, respond to human emotions, and store or process
information.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;We have not seen the film.&lt;/strong&gt; Everything below responds to the claims as marketed — by the
distributor's press release, the IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes synopsis, and material a reader
sent us. Nothing here describes what the film argues or is attributed to anyone appearing in
it; where we quote Gerald Pollack or Veda Austin, we quote what they publish under their own
names. We are also not citing an IMDb user score: two different unverified figures reached
us, 5.6/10 and 5.0/10, and the page would not load for us to check.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What can be assessed is the science the marketing invokes — "EZ water", water that "moves
more efficiently into cells" — because that is the sales language of a real market in
drinking-water hardware.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The exclusion zone is real, and we are not going to pretend otherwise&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Gerald Pollack's laboratory page at the University of Washington describes solutes being
"profoundly excluded from the vicinity of hydrophilic surfaces, to distances up to several
hundred micrometers". That phenomenon is not fringe. A 2020 critical review in the
&lt;em&gt;International Journal of Molecular Sciences&lt;/em&gt; by Elton, Spencer, Riches and Williams concedes
the observation up front: the exclusion zone "has now been independently demonstrated by
several groups", at "500+ µm" near the plastic membrane Nafion and far less near metals
(72 µm near tungsten).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Hold on to the units: &lt;strong&gt;micrometres&lt;/strong&gt;, at an interface, in a dish.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The claim departs from the evidence at the next step: that the zone is a distinct
crystalline phase. Pollack's page calls it "a physically distinct, ordered phase of water.
It is much like a liquid crystal", charged opposite to the water beyond it and built by
energy that "comes from light". The review rejects that account on three grounds.
Quantum chemistry finds the proposed hexagonal H₃O₂ sheets unstable, the authors citing
Hasted's point that "high energy cost of placing hydrogens between oxygens was enough to
make such structures explode". Neutron radiography found no density difference near Nafion,
against the roughly 10% increase the structure predicts. And the birefringence offered as
evidence of crystalline ordering was contaminated by optical reflection artifacts. The
explanation the reviewers prefer, Schurr's diffusiophoresis, needs no new phase at all —
just ion concentration gradients.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Timothy Schmidt, a professor of chemistry at UNSW, gives the physical objection in one line:
hydrogen bonds in liquid water at room temperature "only last millionths of a millionth of a
second", so "any structure in EZ water would dissipate very quickly. In bulk, water has
forgotten its neighbours within picoseconds."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;None of this makes Pollack a fraud, and we are not calling him one.&lt;/strong&gt; His experiments are
published and partly replicated, and his own page is careful where the marketing is not: the
lab "hypothesiz[es]" that "proper hydration is a central feature of function, and therefore
of health". Credit that caveat, then note the reviewers on the same ground: "the hypothesis
that cellular water undergoes significant restructuring remains very controversial."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The information claim was tested, and it failed&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That water holds and transmits information is the load-bearing claim, and unlike the
exclusion zone it has a test history.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It reached &lt;em&gt;Nature&lt;/em&gt; in 1988, when Davenas and twelve co-authors including Jacques Benveniste
published "Human basophil degranulation triggered by very dilute antiserum against IgE".
That paper is paywalled to us, so we will not characterise its methods. What is public is
&lt;em&gt;Nature&lt;/em&gt;'s follow-up standfirst a month later: "The now celebrated report by Dr J. Benveniste
and colleagues elsewhere is found, by a visiting Nature team, to be an insubstantial basis
for the claims made for them." The team
the journal sent to the laboratory included the fraud investigator Walter Stewart and the
magician James Randi. The rest of their report is paywalled, and we are not summarising from
memory what we could not read.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The strongest positive result available to us, Radin, Hayssen, Emoto and Kizu (&lt;em&gt;Explore&lt;/em&gt;,
2006), deserves stating properly. Roughly 2,000 people in Tokyo directed positive intention
at water samples held in an electromagnetically shielded room in California,
without knowing about control samples elsewhere; ice crystals from both sets were "blindly
identified and photographed by an analyst" and the photographs "blindly assessed for
aesthetic appeal by 100 independent judges". Treated crystals scored higher, "P = .001,
one-tailed". PubMed indexes it as a randomised controlled trial.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Now the caveats, some of them the authors' own. The abstract calls it a pilot. The outcome
measured is &lt;strong&gt;how attractive judges found photographs&lt;/strong&gt; — a subjective rating, not a physical
property of water and nothing like a clinical endpoint. The test was one-tailed. The authors
are the proponents: Dean Radin of the Institute of Noetic Sciences and Masaru Emoto, whose
hypothesis it is. No independent replication appears in our sources.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The informal check we have runs the other way. When the journalist Carrie Poppy recreated
Emoto's rice demonstration in 2014 — four labelled jars, thirty days, matching daily verbal
treatment — all four decayed near-identically and the &lt;strong&gt;neglected&lt;/strong&gt; jar stayed healthiest,
the opposite of the prediction. Four jars and one journalist is a demonstration, not a study.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The imagery persuades for a reason too. As the retired Simon Fraser University chemist
Stephen Lower notes on his self-published page, those star-shaped pictures are ice crystals,
not liquid water, and "convey no information about the water" — crystal shape "highly
depend[s] on the conditions and rates of freezing".&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Follow the micrometre to the checkout&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Veda Austin, featured in the film's publicity, describes herself on her own site as a "New
Zealand water researcher, author, artist and mother of three" with "well over 10,000
evidential images of water co-creating with consciousness". Her page lists no formal
scientific training — an absence on the page, not a claim about what she has.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Downstream sits the money. Natural Action, which sells under-sink "drinking water
revitalizers" and whole-home structuring systems, runs a page built around Austin's work by
name, claiming structured water "moves more efficiently into cells" and delivers "cellular
hydration", "energy production" and "detoxification". Nothing in our sources connects the
filmmakers to that retailer; the point is the vocabulary. A hypothesis about micrometre-scale
layers beside a plastic membrane has become a plumbing fixture that detoxifies you.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;No randomised human trial of structured water was located for this piece. Healthline, a
medically reviewed consumer summary rather than a systematic review, reports "there aren't
any high quality human studies that support the many health-related claims made about
structured water". Schmidt is blunter: "it is not possible to buy any other type of water
than regular water. You can change the pH, you can change the dissolved ions and gases, but
not the water itself."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The round number, and the part that is true&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The press release says humans "are composed of 70% water". The USGS puts adults at "up to
60%" — about 60% in men, 55% in women, 78% in newborns. The 73% figure belongs to the brain
and heart, not the body, so the round number is an organ figure promoted to a whole-body one,
off by roughly ten points for a man and fifteen for a woman. The companion line that "Earth
is 70% water" we did not check and make no claim about.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The conservation message, though, is the part with hard numbers behind it. WHO reports that
in 2022 six billion people used safely managed drinking-water services, leaving 2.2 billion
without them; about one million people are estimated to die each year from diarrhoea linked
to unsafe water, sanitation and hand hygiene; 395,000 deaths of children under five could be
avoided each year; over two billion people live in water-stressed countries. On this, a film
urging you to care about water is simply right.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Which makes the trade worth naming. The one published review we located — Kent Hill in Film
Threat, 7/10, the sole critic review on file at Rotten Tomatoes — allowed that "there are
elements some viewers might roll their eyes at", then framed that scepticism as the reason
environmental documentaries struggle. It is the other way round: documented scarcity is being
used to buy credit for claims that cannot survive a blind.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Why E and not D&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;D is for a claim built on real findings and pushed past them, and part of this one qualifies.
Taken alone, "EZ water is a fourth phase of water inside your cells" would grade C or D — the
exclusion zone is real, its structural interpretation is unsupported, and cellular
restructuring "remains very controversial".&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But the claim as submitted rests on water storing information and responding to human
emotion, and that is not an over-extension. It is a hypothesis that was tested and failed,
requiring a mechanism ordinary measurement rules out. Anyone weighing this documentary, or a
device sold in its vocabulary, should know the central claim is contradicted, not merely
unproven.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

One." The answer:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;/blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The piece carries six numbered citations and a sources box. That apparatus does most of
the persuading, because almost nobody clicks. We clicked.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Start with what the article gets right&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Tinned fish is a genuinely good food. Canned sardines in tomato sauce carry about 1.19 g
of EPA plus DHA per 3 oz serving, and canned pink salmon about 0.91 g, per Table 2 of the
NIH Office of Dietary Supplements omega-3 fact sheet. It is cheap, it keeps for years,
and the advice to pair it with whole grains or vegetables for fibre is sound. Higher
omega-3 blood levels really do track with better cognitive outcomes in observational
work. Nothing here is fabricated. What fails is the joinery — the step from those
ingredients to "the best snack for brain health."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The six citations, one at a time&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;A mouse.&lt;/strong&gt; For the proposition that selenium in sardines "offers its own unique brain
health benefit," the article cites Liu et al. (&lt;em&gt;J Trace Elem Med Biol&lt;/em&gt;, 2025) — a dietary
selenium intervention in the 3×Tg-AD transgenic Alzheimer's mouse model. There are no
human participants in it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Three narrative reviews the authors themselves hedge.&lt;/strong&gt; The magnesium review (Maier et
al., &lt;em&gt;Int J Mol Sci&lt;/em&gt;, 2022) has no primary data, rests largely on animal models, and
concedes that for some associations it describes "no causative mechanisms have been
demonstrated yet." The omega-3 review (von Schacky, &lt;em&gt;Nutrients&lt;/em&gt;, 2021) is cited to
support eating fish, but its argument runs the other way: dietary intake is a poor proxy
for omega-3 status. Bioavailability varies roughly 13-fold between people, and food
frequency questionnaires produce "some 50% implausible data."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The third, on fibre and the gut–brain axis (La Torre et al., &lt;em&gt;Gut Microbiome&lt;/em&gt;, 2021), is
the one citation used at about the right strength. Its authors flag that most human
studies used fibre supplements rather than whole foods and that most evidence is
associative — and Kayla Farrell's sentence duly says diets higher in fibre are
"&lt;strong&gt;associated with&lt;/strong&gt; better cognitive health." Credit where it is due.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;A supplement dose you cannot eat.&lt;/strong&gt; The claim that omega-3s and vitamin D are "two
nutrients that can boost mood" is sourced to a Massachusetts General Hospital psychiatry
blog post about a 12-week trial of omega-3 at &lt;strong&gt;up to 4 g/day&lt;/strong&gt; in unmedicated depressed
patients with BMI above 25 and hs-CRP of at least 3 mg/L. Vitamin D is not in the study.
Fish is not in the study. The post is explicit that its findings apply "specifically to
unmedicated, depressed patients with inflammation," and that over-the-counter omega-3
products supply "600–800mg" EPA against the study's 4 g.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;A folate finding used to sell a B12 food.&lt;/strong&gt; B vitamins, the article says, "can slow
cognitive decline and potentially prevent dementia," citing Wang et al. (&lt;em&gt;Nutrition
Reviews&lt;/em&gt;, 2022), a meta-analysis of 95 studies and 46,175 participants. The
supplementation benefit there is &lt;strong&gt;0.14 points on the 30-point MMSE&lt;/strong&gt; (95% CI 0.04–0.23):
statistically real, clinically about half a percent of the instrument. And the dietary
dementia result is folate-specific — folate intake, HR 0.61 (95% CI 0.47–0.78), while
"higher intake of B12 or B6 was not associated with lower dementia risk." Tinned fish's
headline B vitamin is B12.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The question the article never asks&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The promise is an intervention: eat this, and your brain works better. None of the six
citations tests that. Three bodies of evidence that do were not cited.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In the VITAL cognitive substudies (Kang et al., &lt;em&gt;Alzheimer's &amp;amp; Dementia: TRCI&lt;/em&gt;, 2022),
healthy adults aged 60+ took 1 g/day of marine n-3 including 840 mg EPA+DHA — roughly a
tin of sardines' worth, every day — for two to three years. On the primary global
cognitive composite there was &lt;strong&gt;no effect&lt;/strong&gt;: pooled mean difference in annual rate of
change −0.01 (95% CI −0.02 to 0.003; P = .15). "Marine n-3 supplementation (1 g/day) did
not confer cognitive benefits over 2 to 3 years in community-dwelling older adults." Two
to three years is short against a dementia timeline, and this is supplementation, not
diet.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A Cochrane review (Sydenham et al., 3 RCTs, 4,080 participants) found "no benefit of
omega-3 PUFA supplementation on cognitive function in cognitively healthy older people."
That review is from 2012 — the state of the field then, not now.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The most recent and most favourable evidence is an umbrella review of nine systematic
reviews, 14 RCTs and 26,881 participants aged 40+ without dementia or with mild cognitive
impairment (&lt;em&gt;Nutrients&lt;/em&gt;, 2025). &lt;strong&gt;It is positive&lt;/strong&gt;: a pooled "statistically significant
but modest improvement in MMSE scores (effect size: 0.16; 95% CI: 0.01–0.32)." Then put
it in proportion. Two of the nine reviews rated critically low on AMSTAR-2, the analysis
covered MMSE-only trials, and there was &lt;strong&gt;no dose–response relationship&lt;/strong&gt;. A lower bound
of 0.01 points on a 30-point scale is a signal worth chasing, not a basis for naming a
best snack.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The NIH ODS fact sheet summarises the same literature: omega-3 supplementation "does not
affect cognitive function in healthy older adults or in people with Alzheimer's disease
compared to placebo," with possible unconfirmed benefit in mild cognitive impairment.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Two nutrient claims that do not survive their own tables&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;"Tuna is one of the best dietary sources of DHA and EPA," per Maggie Bell. Against the
article's own three nominees it is the weakest by a wide margin: ODS Table 2 puts canned
light tuna in water at &lt;strong&gt;0.19 g&lt;/strong&gt; EPA+DHA per 3 oz, roughly one-sixth of canned sardines
and one-fifth of canned pink salmon.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;On vitamin D, ODS Table 3 gives canned light tuna 1.0 mcg (40 IU, &lt;strong&gt;5% DV&lt;/strong&gt;) per 3 oz and
two canned Atlantic sardines 1.2 mcg (46 IU, &lt;strong&gt;6% DV&lt;/strong&gt;). Cooked sockeye salmon is 14.2
mcg (570 IU, 71% DV) — but that row is cooked sockeye. The table has no canned-salmon

&lt;h2&gt;The advisory that goes unmentioned&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The article tells readers to eat canned tuna "whenever hunger strikes," straight from the
tin, and to serve it to children as a vegetable dip. It never mentions mercury.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;EPA and FDA jointly advise people who are pregnant, might become pregnant or are
breastfeeding, and adults feeding children, to "eat 2 to 3 servings of fish a week from
the 'Best Choices' list OR 1 serving from the 'Good Choices' list," with children's
portions of 1 oz at ages 1–3 rising to 4 oz at 11+. We read the advisory page but not its
downloadable per-species chart, so we make no claim about tier placements.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Consumer Reports tested 30 samples across five canned tuna brands in 2023: albacore
averaged about three times the mercury of light or skipjack tuna, and one in five cans
(six of 30 — a small sample, worth saying so) spiked high enough to change the FDA
recommendation for that can. CR advised pregnant people to avoid canned tuna altogether,
and other adults to cap intake at three 4-oz servings of light tuna weekly. None of that
makes tinned fish unsafe. It makes "whenever hunger strikes" the wrong frequency advice
to publish with no mention of servings per week.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Three experts, two commercial adjacencies&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;"We asked 3 registered dietitians... they all picked the same one" is a consensus frame
built on n = 3 with no stated method: we are not told whether the question was open, or
what else was named.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Two of the three affiliations also matter. Farrell is a dietitian at FRESH
Communications, an agency for "better-for-you food, beverage, and lifestyle brands" whose
services include Public Relations and Influencer Marketing. Bell's name links to
wowmd.com, a direct-to-consumer supplement retailer, where she is the site's credentialed
expert. There is no evidence any of the three was paid to name tinned fish, and we did
not look for a client list. But Real Simple linked both affiliations without
characterising either, and a reader weighing "three independent experts agreed" should
have been told.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Why D&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;D — Misleading.&lt;/strong&gt; Every component is real; the argument built from them is not. A mouse
becomes a human benefit, a folate result justifies a B12 food, and a 0.14-point MMSE
difference becomes "slow cognitive decline and potentially prevent dementia."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Not E: nothing here is contradicted outright. The nutrients are present, the food is
good, and the omega-3 hypothesis remains live — the 2025 umbrella review is positive.
Calling this false would earn a correct rebuttal.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Not C: C is for evidence genuinely split and honestly presented. This is sound material
rearranged to reach a conclusion it does not carry, plus the omission of a federal
advisory that speaks directly to the behaviour recommended.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Eat the sardines. Read the footnotes.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

            &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Nutrition For Mortals&lt;/em&gt;, the podcast made by dietitians Matt Priven and Jen Baum, spent 45 minutes
on adrenal fatigue in an episode re-released on 29 July 2026, and the reporting is theirs. Baum
bought and read the book that named the condition — &lt;em&gt;Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress
Syndrome&lt;/em&gt;, by James Wilson, a chiropractor and naturopath — walked through its cartoon symptom list
and its self-diagnosis quiz, and set that against the 2016 systematic review of 58 studies that
found no meaningful cortisol difference between people said to have adrenal fatigue and healthy
people. One disclosure: we worked from a supplied machine transcript, not the audio, so anything
attributed to the hosts here is as that transcript renders it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Their trace stops in 1998. It doesn't end there.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The man who named it still sells the cure&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;AdrenalFatigue.org, read on 6 August 2026, is a working storefront, footer reading "2026 Copyright
Dr. James L. Wilson's AdrenalFatigue.org". Its "Adrenal Fatigue" category lists nine products, each
captioned "Formulated by Dr. James L. Wilson" — among them Adrenal Fatigue Protocol®, Cortisol
Stress Reset® and Adrenal Rebuilder®, a "Multiglandular including adrenal cortex for stress and
adrenal support". Every claim carries an asterisk down to the FDA disclaimer at the foot of the
page.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We are describing a sequence, not a motive. The same person defined the condition, wrote the quiz
that diagnoses it and sells the multiglandular that treats it, and the shop is still trading.
&lt;em&gt;Endocrine News&lt;/em&gt; reported in 2017 that the "Adrenal Fatigue Quartet" ran to about $200 for a 30-day
supply at minimum recommended doses; we have not re-checked current prices. Wilson's own site, per
that article, says he coined the term in 1998; our sources disagree on when the book appeared, so
we are not putting a year on it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The category has a second problem. Akturk and colleagues (2018, &lt;em&gt;Mayo Clinic Proceedings&lt;/em&gt;) assayed
twelve supplements sold for energy and "adrenal support": all twelve contained detectable
triiodothyronine, and none declared thyroid or steroid hormones on the label. Baum says "studies"
have found this — what we could locate is that one analysis, of twelve products bought in 2016, and
we read only the abstract. It is alarming and it is a single small sample. The Endocrine Society
warns that unnecessary adrenal hormone supplements can suppress the gland's own function and
trigger an adrenal crisis.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Where the 80% came from&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The episode plays Josh Axe claiming about 80% of the population will struggle with adrenal fatigue,
and Priven flags on the spot that the figure is invented. We can add where it came from. A 2015
post on the blog of ZRT Laboratory, a company that sells hormone testing, refers to "the estimated
80% of adult Americans who at some point in their lives will experience some level of adrenal
fatigue" and attributes the estimate to Wilson's book. No study, no link. None is possible, either:
the Endocrine Society states flatly that "There is no test that can detect adrenal fatigue." An
author's assertion about his own coinage has been recirculated for a quarter of a century until it
acquired the grammar of a statistic. Two limits: we traced it to the book via the blog post, not to
the book itself, and we did not trace Axe's own sourcing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Three places we'd push back&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The 2016 review concludes that "adrenal fatigue is still a myth," which is stronger than its design
supports. Its own authors flag heterogeneous, mostly descriptive studies and poor assessment of
fatigue, and not one of the 58 used the insulin tolerance test, the gold standard for HPA-axis
integrity. That is absence of evidence, which is enough here.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;On coffee, Baum argues that habitual drinkers adapt to the point that their bodies stop releasing
cortisol. Lovallo and colleagues (2005) — an abstract-only read for us — ran 96 healthy adults
through a double-blind crossover at 0, 300 or 600 mg a day and found cortisol responses "reduced,
but not eliminated, in healthy young men and women who consume caffeine on a daily basis." Their
practical advice survives that; the mechanism as stated doesn't.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The passage Priven reads as "a 2017 article by the Endocrine Society" is Eric Seaborg's feature in
&lt;em&gt;Endocrine News&lt;/em&gt;, the Society's magazine, quoting Lynnette Nieman — journalism, not a position
statement, though the Society's patient page says the same thing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Their most underrated point&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Baum's claim that the food-and-cortisol link nobody discusses is restriction rather than sugar has
a randomised experiment behind it: Tomiyama and colleagues (2010) found that restricting women to
1,200 kcal a day for three weeks raised total cortisol output with a medium effect size, and that
it was &lt;em&gt;monitoring&lt;/em&gt; intake in a food diary, not restricting it, that raised perceived stress. Keep
the hedge that coverage of this study routinely drops — the authors say the rise "may reflect a
biological freeing of energy that is entirely non–stress-mediated."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;One last thing in our sources that the episode never says. Theodore Friedman, quoted in &lt;em&gt;Endocrine
News&lt;/em&gt;: under stress the adrenals work harder and make more cortisol, not less. The physiology runs
the opposite way to the diagnosis — a cleaner refutation than any of the epidemiology, and it lands
where the hosts do: the tiredness is real, and the man selling the fix for it is the problem.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That sentence is a compression of a message that spread across TikTok and Instagram in 2023,
not a quotation: none of the health professionals in our sources is on record saying "no health
risks", and that distinction decides the grade.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Two arguments are bundled here — that warnings about sugar are a psychological problem rather
than a nutritional one, and that the sweeteners used instead carry no risk. The first is
contradicted. The second is false as an absolute, though its sturdier version, that aspartame
is not a meaningful safety concern for most people at ordinary intakes, is supported by every
regulator we consulted.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Part of this message was paid for&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The aspartame half has a documented origin. A joint investigation by The Examination and The
Washington Post, published on 13 September 2023, reviewed more than 6,000 posts from 68
registered dietitians; of the 33 posting paid content, roughly 17 "did not clearly disclose
their sponsorships in at least one" post. On aspartame specifically it found at least 35 posts
from 12 health professionals, paid by American Beverage — the lobbying group whose members
include Coca-Cola and PepsiCo — to push back on WHO's announcements. &lt;strong&gt;Only 11 of the 35 videos
named the association or "AmeriBev" at the time of posting.&lt;/strong&gt; Two months later the FTC sent
warning letters over roughly three dozen posts, objecting that disclosures such as a bare &lt;code&gt;#ad&lt;/code&gt;
were "inadequate" — an account we take from The Examination's follow-up, not from the FTC's own
documents, which we could not read.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;None of this shows anyone was bought: warning letters are warnings, not findings that a law was
broken, several dietitians said the sponsor had no editorial control, and Mary Ellen Phipps
said the suggestion that "I would compromise my professional ethics for money is insulting".
The documented failure is disclosure.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Sugar warnings are not a psychological artefact&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;WHO's 2015 guideline makes reducing free sugars a &lt;strong&gt;strong&lt;/strong&gt; recommendation — its term for one
whose "desirable effects… outweigh the undesirable consequences". Cutting free sugars — those
added by a manufacturer, cook or consumer, plus those in honey, syrups and juice, but not the
sugars in whole fruit, vegetables or milk — below 10% of energy is also strong, on
moderate-quality evidence about dental caries; below 5% is conditional, on very low-quality
evidence. The UK's Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition, which disagrees with WHO about
sweeteners, still restated in April 2025 that free sugars should not exceed 5% of energy.
&lt;strong&gt;Two committees that read the evidence differently land in the same place on sugar.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Where the claimants have a point is certainty. The 2023 BMJ umbrella review graded 73
meta-analyses covering 83 health outcomes: &lt;strong&gt;none reached high-quality evidence.&lt;/strong&gt; Four — 5% —
reached moderate quality: body weight gain from sugary drinks, and ectopic, liver and muscle
fat accumulation from added sugars. Eight more reached the tier below, among them type 2
diabetes and coronary heart disease. Most of that evidence is observational and graded
accordingly: the cohort, case-control and cross-sectional findings are "graded as 'low' or
'very low' quality owing to the observational study design", the authors write, and heavy sugar
intake "may be a marker of an unhealthy diet and lifestyle". They still recommend added sugar
below 25 g a day. The certainty is lower than the rhetoric; the direction is not in doubt.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Aspartame at ordinary intakes is not the problem&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This part the claim gets right. EFSA's 2013 re-evaluation concluded that aspartame "is safe at
current levels of exposure" and kept the acceptable daily intake at 40 mg per kg of body weight
as "protective for the general population". (We read EFSA's summary, not the full opinion.)&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In July 2023 two WHO bodies reported on the same day; merging them is the commonest error in
this topic's coverage. &lt;strong&gt;IARC&lt;/strong&gt; classified aspartame as Group 2B, &lt;em&gt;possibly carcinogenic&lt;/em&gt;, on
limited evidence for liver cancer in humans and limited animal and mechanistic evidence.
&lt;strong&gt;JECFA&lt;/strong&gt; simultaneously reaffirmed the acceptable daily intake of 0–40 mg/kg, finding "no
sufficient reason to change" it. IARC asks whether a substance &lt;em&gt;can&lt;/em&gt; cause cancer; JECFA asks
whether it &lt;em&gt;does&lt;/em&gt; at the doses people consume. On WHO's own arithmetic, a 70 kg adult would
need more than 9 to 14 cans a day of a diet drink containing 200–300 mg of aspartame to exceed
the limit. WHO's Francesco Branca gave the honest middle — "while safety is not a major concern
at the doses which are commonly used, potential effects have been described that need to be
investigated by more and better studies."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;"No health risks" is still false&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The cleanest refutation comes from the regulator the claim leans on. EFSA states that for
people with phenylketonuria "the ADI is not applicable, as they require strict adherence to a
diet low in phenylalanine." That group must avoid aspartame — a small risk confined to one
population, but "no health risks" does not survive it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Beyond that the picture is unsettled, not reassuring. WHO's 2023 guideline "suggests that
non-sugar sweeteners not be used as a means of achieving weight control or reducing the risk of
noncommunicable diseases" — a &lt;strong&gt;conditional&lt;/strong&gt; recommendation on &lt;strong&gt;low-certainty&lt;/strong&gt;
evidence, not a ban, not a safety ruling, and not applicable to people with existing diabetes.
SACN recommends "that intake of NSS be minimised" and notes "insufficient evidence to carry out
a full risk assessment."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The observational signal is limited. In the French NutriNet-Santé cohort — 102,865 adults,
median follow-up 7.7 years — higher aspartame intake was associated with overall cancer at a
hazard ratio of 1.15 (95% CI 1.03–1.28) and breast cancer at 1.22 (1.01–1.48); sucralose showed
no cancer association. A cardiovascular analysis of the same cohort, which we have only in
abstract, linked aspartame to cerebrovascular events at 1.17 (1.03–1.33) and claims only
"a potential direct association". These are associations in a
volunteer cohort whose participants "were more likely to be women… to have health-conscious
behaviours", and whose authors write that "causal links cannot be established by this unique
study."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Two committees, one review, different answers&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;WHO and SACN read the &lt;em&gt;same&lt;/em&gt; systematic review and disagreed, because SACN "gives greater
weight to RCTs of adequate quality and duration and less weight to PCS evidence… WHO gave
greater weight to PCS evidence over RCT evidence."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Weighting the trials, SACN finds that sweeteners used &lt;em&gt;in place of&lt;/em&gt; sugars produced a small
reduction in body weight in adults — 0.71 kg pooled, low certainty. Cohort studies point the
other way, and SACN explains why they might: reverse causality, residual confounding, and the
fact that "adjusting for BMI at baseline is unlikely to fully adjust for confounding where NSS
use is a marker of dietary concern or restraint." That applies to NutriNet-Santé.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Here is the distinction both sides drop.&lt;/strong&gt; Restricting the trials to those instructing
habitual sugary-drink consumers to swap made the weight effect non-significant, and sweeteners
tested against water or placebo showed no effect. Replacing sugar with a sweetener is a
different question from adding one, and only the first has ever looked like it works. SACN
vindicates nobody: every sweetener used in the UK has passed EFSA safety assessment, and it
recommends minimising them anyway.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;They are right about food guilt&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The "food anxiety" framing distorts a real clinical position rather than inventing one. Several
sponsored posts were made in the language of removing stigma — one dietitian on "removing guilt
and shame around food", another on letting children have unrestricted access to sweets to
"prevent sweets obsession". That position has experimental support: a 2014 study in &lt;em&gt;Appetite&lt;/em&gt;,
which we have in abstract only, found that short-term restriction of a palatable food
&lt;em&gt;increased&lt;/em&gt; 37 preschoolers' selection and intake of it, most strongly among children whose
parents habitually used restriction — "the use of restriction does not reduce children's
consumption of these foods." Thirty-seven children in a laboratory is not a study of adult food
guilt, but it is a real result: shame-based nutrition advice is a poor tool.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Why this is a D&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Not an E. The sweetener argument's defensible version stands on genuine regulatory findings —
EFSA's conclusion, JECFA's reaffirmed limit, the 9-to-14-cans arithmetic — and the "food
anxiety" half distorts a position that has evidence behind it. Decisively, "no health risks" is
a compression: nobody in the sourced record is quoted saying those words.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Not a C either. The evidence is genuinely split on sweeteners, where two committees read one
review and reached different recommendations. It is not split on the other half: reducing free
sugars is a strong WHO recommendation that SACN independently reiterates.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;D, because both halves take something real and push it one step too far.&lt;/strong&gt; The uncertainty in
the sweetener evidence is genuine — and a lobbying group paid credentialed professionals to
sell that uncertainty as reassurance. Being right that the evidence is unsettled is not the
same as saying there is nothing to settle.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Three claims in one sentence: that vinegar produces meaningful fat loss, that the fat it removes
is abdominal fat in particular, and that you should take it before every meal. The first is true
at a scale the word "melts" cannot survive. The second is not what the trial showed. The third is
the opposite of what was tested.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The best trial found 1.9 kg in twelve weeks&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;One good study sits behind the weight-loss half of this claim and the whole thing rests on it: a
2009 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 175 randomised and 155 analysed over 12
weeks. Participants were "obese" by Japanese criteria, meaning a BMI between 25 and 30 — mean
27.2. This is not a Western obese cohort, and the paper says so.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Over twelve weeks, the placebo group went from 74.2 to 74.6 kg — they gained 0.4 kg. The low-dose
group lost 1.2 kg and the high-dose group 1.9 kg. Waist circumference fell by 1.4 and 1.9 cm
against a placebo group that did not move.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The trial's authors are the best witnesses against the way it gets quoted: &lt;strong&gt;"Although the
degree of reduction was not very high…"&lt;/strong&gt; is their phrasing, not ours. And they did something
almost no vinegar study does — kept measuring for four weeks after the vinegar stopped. By the end
of that washout the low-dose group was back at 74.9 kg, its exact starting weight, and the authors
concluded that "continuous administration of vinegar is necessary in order to maintain the
positive effects."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;All five authors worked at the research institute of Mizkan Group Corporation, a vinegar
manufacturer, whose ethics committee helped approve the protocol. Worth knowing, and not a
refutation: the trial was double-blind against a placebo formulated to taste sour.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;"Belly fat" is where it was measured, not where it went&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The same trial did CT scans at L4–L5, which is why it is the source for the belly-fat framing.
Visceral fat area fell by 2.8 and 4.9 per cent against a 4.4 per cent &lt;em&gt;rise&lt;/em&gt; on placebo — but
subcutaneous fat area fell too, by 2.3 and 2.8 per cent, and so did total fat area. &lt;strong&gt;Nothing here
shows vinegar preferentially removing abdominal fat; it shows a small amount of fat coming off a
body, measured at the abdomen.&lt;/strong&gt; The authors put the visceral change at "more than 5 cm²", which
they estimate "might lead to a 0.1 decrease in the number of metabolic risk factors."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The 2025 meta-analysis of ten trials makes the same point from another direction. Body weight, BMI
and waist circumference all reached significance in the pooled estimate. Waist–hip ratio — the one
outcome measuring where fat sits rather than how much of it there is — did not: SMD −0.11,
p = 0.53. Whether fat loss can be steered to one region at all is a separate question, and no
source here addresses it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The trial dosed vinegar after meals, in half a litre of sweetened drink&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This is the detail that quietly falsifies the instruction people are following. The intervention
was not a shot of vinegar before eating. It was &lt;strong&gt;500 ml a day of a flavoured,
artificially sweetened beverage containing 15 or 30 ml of apple vinegar, drunk in two 250 ml
portions, after breakfast and after supper.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Twice a day, not before every meal; after it, not before. Whatever that trial demonstrates, it is
not the protocol attached to the claim.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The dose matters too. In the 2025 meta-analysis, the pooled weight effect at 5–15 ml a day — the
range most people actually take — was not statistically significant. The significant result came
from the 30 ml trials.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;A number that outlived the study it came from&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The current wave of this claim is powered by one trial: a 2024 study of Lebanese adolescents and
young adults reporting losses of around 9 per cent of body mass on 5, 10 or 15 ml of vinegar a
day. Its publisher issued a press release, and it travelled worldwide.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Researchers began flagging problems in June 2024. A forensic reconstruction of the reported data
found participants clustering implausibly at the exact BMI eligibility boundaries of 27 and 34, an
excess at exactly the minimum age of 12, and nobody in the central 17–21 range. Its strongest
argument needs no statistics at all: a loss that size would require something like a 40–60 per
cent increase in basal metabolic rate, or an effect rivalling GLP-1 agonists. From vinegar.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The paper was retracted on 23 September 2025, on grounds that "the authors' analyses could not be
replicated and multiple errors were identified", with a dataset showing patterns "inconsistent
with random allocation of participants to treatment groups" and "improbably small p-values given
the limited number of participants", plus no prospective trial registration.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Four days &lt;em&gt;before&lt;/em&gt; that retraction, the 2025 meta-analysis was published with the retracted trial
inside its pooled estimate. Its discussion converts the pooled effect size into an average loss of
about 7.4 kg without showing how. &lt;strong&gt;We are not repeating that figure as a finding: it is an
unexplained round number drawn from a pool containing a study that formally no longer exists.&lt;/strong&gt; It
is also the number most likely to reach anyone who meets this claim.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The meta-analysis is honest about the rest — five of its ten trials were rated high risk of bias,
and the authors note "the high heterogeneity between the studies… the presence of funnel plot
asymmetry… suggests a potential risk of publication bias", concluding that "further studies are
needed to determine the true efficacy and safety of ACV in the prevention and treatment of
obesity."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;What the claim gets right&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Vinegar is not inert, and "before a meal" is the right timing — for a different outcome. A 2017
meta-analysis found vinegar reduced post-meal glucose and insulin responses in both healthy people
and people with glucose disorders. We could only read that paper's abstract, so we are not
describing its trial count, doses or limitations.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The mechanism is real and has been measured: 30 ml of apple cider vinegar in water before a
rice-pudding test meal slowed gastric emptying compared with water alone. Memorial Sloan
Kettering's monograph gives the same mechanism — acetic acid slowing gastric emptying and
increasing satiety, "thereby reducing caloric intake" — while noting the evidence overall "is not
conclusive due to heterogeneity between studies."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Two caveats. The 2009 trial found no significant between-group differences in fasting glucose,
HbA1c, insulin or insulin resistance across twelve weeks; the glycaemic evidence is about the
post-meal spike, a biomarker and a different endpoint from long-term control. And
the gastric-emptying study was done in ten patients with type 1 diabetes and diagnosed
gastroparesis, whose authors concluded the slowing "might be a disadvantage regarding their
glycaemic control." For that group, the mechanism is the problem.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The satiety is nausea&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The most useful finding here comes from a 2014 appetite study, read in abstract only. Vinegar
ingestion significantly reduced appetite — and
significantly raised nausea, with the least palatable version having the greatest effect. Tasting
vinegar without swallowing did nothing. The authors: "these effects are largely due to poor
tolerability following ingestion invoking feelings of nausea", and promoting vinegar as a natural
appetite suppressant "does not seem appropriate."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;It is not dangerous, and the enamel worry is unresolved&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Nothing here supports treating diluted vinegar as risky: MSKCC lists drug interactions as "None
known", and the adverse events on record are isolated case reports involving vinegar &lt;em&gt;tablets&lt;/em&gt;,
topical use on children, and extreme intake. Tooth enamel is the one open question, and we cannot
resolve it. The only erosion study available to us was in vitro, immersing human wisdom teeth for
up to eight hours in five vinegars — none of them apple cider vinegar — with the authors
cautioning that in vivo conditions differ significantly. Hours of immersion is not a diluted glass
swallowed in a minute.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Why this is a D and not a C or an E&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Not an E, because the evidence does not contradict the claim. A properly blinded trial really did
find lower weight, smaller waists and less abdominal fat, and the post-meal glucose effect is real
and mechanistically explained. Calling this false invites a correct rebuttal from anyone holding
the 2009 paper.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Not a C, because the evidence is not split. Every source points the same direction; only the
magnitude is in dispute, and the inflation is traceable to one retracted trial and one unexplained
conversion.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;D, because every load-bearing part of the claim is a real finding stretched past breaking.&lt;/strong&gt;
"Melts belly fat" is 1.2 to 1.9 kg over three months, regained within four weeks of stopping, with
subcutaneous fat falling alongside visceral fat. "Before every meal" is the reverse of the
protocol that produced those numbers. And the dose most people take is the dose the pooled
evidence found nothing for.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

examining, and it is why this gets a D rather than an E.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The piece runs on Children's Health Defense under Joseph Mercola's byline, republished from
his own site. It argues that plant-based drinks shortchange toddlers nutritionally. Then, having
established that, it tells parents not to use commercial infant formula at all — and to make
their own from raw milk, raw cream and beef gelatin instead.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The first argument is largely sound. The second is the kind of advice that puts infants in
intensive care.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Start with what it gets right&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The German study it cites is real: a March 2025 paper in the &lt;em&gt;Journal of Health, Population and
Nutrition&lt;/em&gt; modelling what happens to a toddler's nutrient intake when cow's milk is swapped for
plant drinks.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The article describes it fairly, and deserves credit for a caveat most coverage would bury. It
tells readers plainly that the study "didn't involve physically swapping milk for plant-based
drinks and then checking nutrient levels in children" and was "a theoretical model." That is
accurate — the researchers replaced 219 g/day of cow's milk across a seven-day standard German
menu and recalculated. It states the finding correctly too: with &lt;strong&gt;non-fortified&lt;/strong&gt; drinks,
calcium, riboflavin, B12 and iodine intake fell to around half.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The 2021 &lt;em&gt;JAMA Pediatrics&lt;/em&gt; commentary it cites is real as well, and says roughly what the article
says it does: plant-based beverages "cannot fully substitute for the nutrient quality of cow's
milk in children 12 to 24 months of age." The 30 case reports of rickets, scurvy, kwashiorkor and
metabolic alkalosis in children fed plant drinks near-exclusively — those are real too.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A parent reading this far has been told true things, sourced to real papers. That is precisely
why what follows works.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The summary box contradicts the study&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The bullet points at the top — the part most readers actually read — say nutrients drop by around
50% &lt;strong&gt;"even when fortified."&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The study found the opposite. Verbatim: "with the fortified products, only the intake of iodine
was reduced." Calcium, B2 and B12 were, in the authors' words, "almost achieved."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That is not a nuance. Fortification is the entire hinge of the paper, and the authors' own
recommendation is that manufacturers &lt;em&gt;fortify more&lt;/em&gt; — specifically that they add iodine, so plant
drinks can be "equivalent to animal-based products." Nowhere do they suggest raw milk. Raw milk
was not studied.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;What the authorities the article invokes actually recommend&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The article is right that paediatric bodies advise against most plant drinks as a milk replacement
under two. It does not tell you what those same bodies recommend instead.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The American Academy of Pediatrics: "Other than soy milk, plant-based milks are not recommended
for children to drink in place of dairy milk. &lt;strong&gt;Soy milk is nutritionally equivalent to cow's milk
and is an acceptable alternative.&lt;/strong&gt;"&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The CDC: "Fortified dairy alternatives are the only milk alternatives that help meet a child's
recommended dairy needs" — choose unsweetened, fortified with vitamin D and calcium.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;NASPGHAN, the paediatric gastroenterology society: "only appropriate commercial infant formulas be
used as alternatives to human milk in the first year of life."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Cow's milk, fortified unsweetened soy, or commercial formula. Every relevant body. None of them
says raw milk. None of them says make it yourself.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Then the article turns&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Its actual recommendation:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;"If you're formula-feeding or supplementing, I do not recommend using commercial infant formula
— especially not soy-based… I recommend making your own infant formula using this recipe based
on nutrient-rich animal foods like raw grass-fed cow's milk, organic raw cream and grass-fed
beef gelatin."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/blockquote&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Here is what the same authorities say about that.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The &lt;strong&gt;FDA&lt;/strong&gt;, in a standing advisory: "the FDA strongly advises parents and caregivers not to make
and feed their infants homemade infant formulas." It notes it "has recently received adverse event
reports of hospitalized infants suffering from hypocalcemia" fed homemade formula.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The &lt;strong&gt;AAP&lt;/strong&gt;, addressing this recipe almost by name: "&lt;strong&gt;Do not make a homemade formula from
ingredients at the store, such as powdered cow milk or raw milk and sugar.&lt;/strong&gt;" Its raw milk guidance
separately tells parents to avoid "unpasteurized milk &lt;strong&gt;or cream&lt;/strong&gt;" — both ingredients in the
recipe.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The &lt;strong&gt;CDC&lt;/strong&gt;: "Do not give your child raw or unpasteurized milk."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;What happens when parents follow this advice&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This is not hypothetical, and the case literature is not gentle.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A 2021 CDC &lt;em&gt;MMWR&lt;/em&gt; report describes three infants — aged four, five and nine months — treated across
New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware after being fed homemade formula. Serum calcium of 4.0 and
4.5 mg/dL, against a normal range of 8.8 to 10.8. One went into &lt;strong&gt;cardiac arrest&lt;/strong&gt; and sustained
&lt;strong&gt;diffuse hypoxic brain injury&lt;/strong&gt;. Two had rickets. One had no detectable vitamin D.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A case report in &lt;em&gt;Pediatrics&lt;/em&gt; the same year describes two more infants presenting within a week of
each other with vitamin D deficiency rickets and severe hypocalcaemia — &lt;strong&gt;seizures and cardiac
arrest&lt;/strong&gt; — from a homemade formula found online. The authors note something worth sitting with:
both families were seeing their paediatrician regularly and discussing feeding in detail, and
&lt;strong&gt;neither disclosed the homemade formula.&lt;/strong&gt; Parents who believe they have found something better
do not mention it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And on the specific ingredient: a peer-reviewed analysis of 144 homemade infant formula recipes
found &lt;strong&gt;raw cow's milk was the single most common base, at 24.3%&lt;/strong&gt; — the most popular ingredient in
a recipe genre the authors conclude poses "nutritional and food safety concerns… such as… use of
harmful ingredients such as raw unpasteurised milks."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The recipe in this article is not an outlier. It is the archetype.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;On raw milk's "living enzymes"&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The article's case for raw milk is that pasteurisation destroys enzymes, beneficial bacteria and
immune compounds.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The AAP's policy statement addresses this directly: the purported benefits "have not been clearly
demonstrated in evidence-based studies and, therefore, do not outweigh the risks… Substantial data
suggest that pasteurized milk confers equivalent health benefits compared with raw milk, without
the additional risk of bacterial infections."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We have &lt;a href="https://nutribunk.org/debunks/raw-milk-safer-and-more-nutritious-pasteurized-milk"&gt;examined the raw milk claim in full&lt;/a&gt;
and graded it &lt;strong&gt;E · False&lt;/strong&gt;. The enzyme argument collapses on inspection: the main milk enzyme
survives pasteurisation anyway, the one destroyed plays no role in human digestion, and any enzyme
reaching your stomach is digested like every other protein.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Children under five are among the groups at highest risk from raw milk. Infants are the group this
article is addressing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The soy claim is stretched past its source&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;One more overstatement worth naming. The article says soy formula's phytoestrogens "alter DNA
expression," citing a 2017 &lt;em&gt;Environmental Health Perspectives&lt;/em&gt; study.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That study measured DNA &lt;strong&gt;methylation&lt;/strong&gt;, not expression, in vaginal epithelial cells — with four
soy-fed infants against six formula-fed at the discovery stage. Its authors wrote that the health
consequences "if any, remain unknown," and, explicitly: "&lt;strong&gt;we do not believe they constitute a
clear contraindication for soy formula use.&lt;/strong&gt;"&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The article omits that sentence. It also uses a study comparing soy formula to &lt;em&gt;cow's-milk formula&lt;/em&gt;
as grounds for rejecting commercial formula entirely — a conclusion the comparison cannot support,
since both arms were commercial formula.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Where the advice leads&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Every practical recommendation in the piece routes to the author's own website — seven links,
including the formula recipe itself. No expert is quoted anywhere in the article. No brand of plant
milk is named. The only company named is the author's.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The verdict&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;D · Misleading&lt;/strong&gt;, and the grade is doing precise work here.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Not E, because the nutritional premise is genuinely well-sourced. A parent who checks the German
study will find it says roughly what the article says. That accuracy is real, and pretending
otherwise would be its own dishonesty.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;D, because that accuracy is spent on something else. The article builds trust with defensible
science about plant drinks, then converts it into advice — raw milk and homemade formula for
infants — that the FDA, AAP, CDC and NASPGHAN each warn against, and that appears in the case
literature alongside seizures, cardiac arrest and hypoxic brain injury.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If you are worried about what is in your toddler's cup, the honest answer is dull: cow's milk, or
fortified unsweetened soy, and commercial formula for infants. It sells nothing.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

directly, and its value is partly in who is answering. Walter Willett has spent five decades on
dietary fat epidemiology; when he says seed oils are "basically a very healthy part of a diet, and
when you look at some of the alternatives—like butter or lard—these are much better," that is a
considered position, not a press release.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The framing we'd underline is the one about ultra-processed foods being "the problem, rather the
oils themselves." That is the crux of the entire debate, and it explains why the claim feels true to
people who try cutting seed oils and feel better. Eliminating seed oils in practice means
eliminating fried food, packaged snacks and takeaways. People do feel better. The oil gets the
credit.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Where we'd add friction&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Coverage in this genre — including ours — tends to present the rebuttal as tidier than the evidence
warrants, so two things are worth saying alongside it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The strongest evidence is about substitution, not addition.&lt;/strong&gt; The impressive cardiovascular
numbers come from trials replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated oil. The Cochrane review that
tested simply &lt;em&gt;increasing&lt;/em&gt; omega-6 intake rated its 19 trials as low-to-very-low quality and
inconclusive. "Replacing butter with canola looks beneficial" is well supported. "More linoleic acid
is good for you" is not the same statement, and is much less well supported.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Some of the reassurance is industry-funded.&lt;/strong&gt; A widely covered 2026 review concluding seed oil
concerns are "without scientific foundation" was supported by Soy Nutrition Institute Global with
the United Soybean Board. Funding does not make findings wrong, and the independent evidence
genuinely does point the same way. But readers being told the science is settled deserve to know who
paid for some of the settling — particularly on a site like this, which spends most of its time
pointing out that influencers have products to sell.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The mainstream position on seed oils is, we think, correct. It is also being defended slightly more
confidently than the underlying evidence supports, and both things can be true at once.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The Sleepy Girl Mocktail — tart cherry juice, a scoop of magnesium powder, topped with sparkling
water — is the rare viral wellness trend with plausible mechanisms behind both active ingredients.
It is cheap, it is not dangerous, and unlike most of what we cover, nobody is getting hurt.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Then we read the trials, and B stopped being defensible.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The tart cherry evidence is two tiny pilots&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The headline figure is that tart cherry juice adds &lt;strong&gt;84 minutes&lt;/strong&gt; of sleep. That comes from a 2018
crossover trial that randomised 11 people, excluded three for sleep apnoea, and &lt;strong&gt;analysed eight&lt;/strong&gt;.
Total sleep time was the only one of six polysomnography measures to reach significance — sleep
efficiency, sleep latency, wake after sleep onset, number of awakenings and REM latency were all
non-significant. The standard deviation on that 84 minutes was ±62.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The authors were explicit that it was "a pilot study to determine power for a larger, adequately
powered study." It was supported by the Cherry Marketing Institute, which also supplied the juice.
It has not been replicated.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The other insomnia trial, from 2010, had 15 participants, used sleep diaries rather than
polysomnography, and found only wake-after-sleep-onset significantly reduced — &lt;strong&gt;not&lt;/strong&gt; total sleep
time, and not sleep latency. A frequently repeated "17 more minutes of sleep" from that study is a
misreading: 17 minutes &lt;em&gt;less time awake&lt;/em&gt;, which is not the same thing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The one systematic review, published in 2025, declined to run a meta-analysis at all and concluded
the evidence "is still limited and heterogeneous."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The melatonin argument is off by orders of magnitude&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Tart cherries do contain melatonin. Montmorency cherries measure about &lt;strong&gt;13.5 nanograms per gram&lt;/strong&gt; —
so 100 g supplies roughly &lt;strong&gt;1.35 micrograms&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A melatonin supplement is typically 0.5 to 5 &lt;strong&gt;milligrams&lt;/strong&gt;. The cherry juice is delivering something
in the range of one-thousandth of a supplement dose. Whatever tart cherry does, "it's the melatonin"
is not a serious explanation.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The magnesium evidence is thinner than its reputation&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The meta-analysis everyone cites pooled &lt;strong&gt;three trials in 151 older adults&lt;/strong&gt; and found sleep onset
latency reduced by about 17 minutes. Total sleep time increased by 16 minutes — &lt;strong&gt;not statistically
significant&lt;/strong&gt;. The authors' own assessment: all trials at "moderate-to-high risk of bias," outcomes
supported by "low to very low quality of evidence."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Two details rarely survive the retelling. Those trials used magnesium &lt;strong&gt;oxide and citrate&lt;/strong&gt; — not
the glycinate the recipe calls for. And the trial driving the latency result &lt;strong&gt;required participants
to have low or low-normal serum magnesium to enrol&lt;/strong&gt;. It is evidence about correcting a shortfall,
not about topping up someone already replete.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The only glycinate-specific sleep trial reported a p-value of 0.049 and a small effect size, with
every secondary outcome null and no objective sleep measurement — and the placebo group improved by
18% on its own.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Nobody has studied the drink&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This is the part that settles the grade. &lt;strong&gt;No trial has tested the combination.&lt;/strong&gt; Any claim of
synergy between tart cherry and magnesium is unevidenced.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Worse, the recipe doesn't match the research it borrows credibility from. The trials used 240 ml of
tart cherry juice &lt;strong&gt;twice daily&lt;/strong&gt;; the viral recipe uses half a cup once at bedtime — roughly a
quarter of the studied dose. The suggested 100–200 mg of magnesium is below every trial dose.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Two practical notes&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A full serving of some magnesium powders delivers &lt;strong&gt;350 mg of elemental magnesium — exactly the
NIH's upper limit for supplemental magnesium&lt;/strong&gt;, before counting food. That limit exists because of
gastrointestinal effects, and the risk of toxicity rises with impaired kidney function. Anyone with
reduced renal function should not be free-pouring magnesium.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Magnesium also interacts with medications: separate it from bisphosphonates and from tetracycline or
quinolone antibiotics by several hours.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;So what is it?&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Probably a pleasant bedtime ritual that helps some people relax, with a real possibility that the
ritual and the expectation are doing most of the work. A sleep physician quoted on the trend put it
plainly: "It is possible that this mocktail works as a placebo. The placebo effect is quite strong."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That is not a takedown. If a nightly wind-down routine helps you sleep, the mechanism is your
business. But "there's science behind it" overstates what has actually been shown, and the honest
grade for a claim with plausible mechanisms, tiny industry-linked pilots, under-dosed recipes and no
test of the actual product is &lt;strong&gt;Mixed / Unproven&lt;/strong&gt; — not Mostly True.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We would happily revise this to a B if someone runs the trial. One properly powered tart cherry
insomnia study is currently underway, which itself tells you what the field thinks of the existing
evidence.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

            &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;The case against seed oils arrives as one claim but is really three, and they
are not equally wrong. Pulling them apart is the only way to grade this honestly — because a
straight "false" would require ignoring some real chemistry, and a straight "true" would require
ignoring most of the clinical evidence.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Claim one: linoleic acid drives inflammation&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This is the load-bearing claim, and it is the one that fails most cleanly.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A systematic review of 15 randomised controlled trials found "virtually no evidence… to show that
addition of LA to the diet increases the concentration of inflammatory markers" in healthy people.
A later meta-analysis of 30 RCTs in 1,377 people found no significant effect on TNF, IL-6,
fibrinogen, or adhesion molecules. &lt;em&gt;(Its subgroup analysis did suggest CRP might rise with very
large increases in intake — a caveat the debunkings usually drop, and we won't.)&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Biomarker epidemiology points the same way. Pooling 30 prospective cohorts across 13 countries —
68,659 participants, 15,198 cardiovascular events — higher circulating linoleic acid was associated
with &lt;strong&gt;lower&lt;/strong&gt; total cardiovascular disease and notably lower cardiovascular mortality. Arachidonic
acid, the supposed inflammatory endpoint of the pathway, showed no increased risk.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Claim two: the processing is sinister&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Partly true, and the debunkings overreach here.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Hexane really is used as an extraction solvent, and it is mostly removed in refining. But "mostly"
is doing work: the EU sets a residue limit of 1 mg/kg, real-world residue data are described as
scarce and outdated, and EFSA is currently re-evaluating hexane. The United States sets &lt;strong&gt;no residue
limit for hexane in oils at all.&lt;/strong&gt; Testing commissioned in France found residues in 36 of 56 food
products — all within European limits, but present.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The oxidation chemistry is also real. Heating linoleic-rich oil produces toxic aldehydes such as
4-hydroxynonenal, measurable in fast-food fries. What that evidence concerns is &lt;strong&gt;prolonged,
repeated, commercial-scale frying with reused oil&lt;/strong&gt; — not a home sauté — and it applies to any
PUFA-rich oil rather than singling out seed oils.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So: an honest critic could say "industrial frying oil chemistry deserves scrutiny and hexane
residues are under-studied," and be standing on real ground. That is not what "toxic industrial
sludge" means, and it is not what the claim asks you to conclude.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Claim three: avoiding seed oils prevents sunburn&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There is no human evidence for this. None. We looked specifically.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The trial usually invoked is a 1994 study of 76 patients that found a low-fat diet reduced new
actinic keratoses — an effect attributed to &lt;strong&gt;total&lt;/strong&gt; dietary fat, not to any specific fat type, and
not a study about seed oils. Meanwhile the actual photoprotection evidence runs the opposite
direction: supplementing 4 g/day of omega-3 EPA raised the UV erythemal threshold by around a third
and reduced UV-induced p53-positive skin cells.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A dermatologist's summary, on the record: "Online claims that suggest you can avoid sunscreen use if
you eat the right foods are false."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Why this is D and not E&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Because the evidence for the &lt;em&gt;positive&lt;/em&gt; case is weaker than its confident promoters admit, and a
fact-checking site should say so.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The Cochrane review — the strictest standard in the business — examined 19 RCTs of increasing
omega-6 intake and rated the evidence &lt;strong&gt;low to very low quality&lt;/strong&gt;, inconclusive for benefit or harm.
The frequently-cited "30% cardiovascular reduction" comes from trials that &lt;strong&gt;replaced saturated fat
with polyunsaturated oil&lt;/strong&gt;, which is a different question from adding omega-6, and the two get
conflated in both directions. Two re-analyses of recovered data from old trials using very high
linoleic acid diets found &lt;em&gt;higher&lt;/em&gt; mortality in the intervention arms — both are small, dated, and
confounded by the trans fat content of period margarines, but they exist.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And there is something a reader deserves to know: several of the highest-profile papers concluding
seed oil concerns are baseless were &lt;strong&gt;funded by the soy industry&lt;/strong&gt; — including a widely covered 2026
review supported by Soy Nutrition Institute Global with the United Soybean Board. That does not make
their conclusions wrong. It does mean "the science is settled" is being asserted, in part, by people
who sell the product.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The thing the argument gets right, pointed the wrong way&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Seed oils are concentrated in ultra-processed foods, fast food, and packaged snacks. That is where
most people encounter them, and those foods are independently associated with poor health outcomes.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The claim takes a real signal — people eating lots of seed oil are often eating lots of junk — and
attributes it to the oil rather than the junk. As a Cleveland Clinic dietitian put it: "Most seed
oils are utilized in the form of packaged foods, fast foods and eating out, and that's where most of
the danger lies."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Misleading, in the precise sense: assembled from true components, arranged to produce a conclusion
the evidence does not support.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

the honest reading is more complicated than either "your chocolate is poisoned" or "nothing to see
here."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;What was actually found&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Consumer Reports tested 28 dark chocolate bars and detected lead and cadmium in all of them. For 23
of the 28, eating one ounce a day would put an adult over CR's level of concern for at least one
metal. Five exceeded for both.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Notably, five bars came in relatively low for both metals — which is the finding CR's own researcher
emphasised, and the most actionable part of the story. Contamination at these levels is not an
inherent property of dark chocolate.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The threshold is where it gets interesting&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;CR measured against California's Proposition 65 Maximum Allowable Dose Levels: 0.5 µg/day for lead,
4.1 µg/day for cadmium. CR was explicit about why — there are no federal limits for lead and cadmium
in most foods, so a state warning-label standard is the only available yardstick.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But a MADL is a &lt;strong&gt;warning-label trigger&lt;/strong&gt;, not a safety limit, and it is deliberately set at &lt;strong&gt;one
one-thousandth&lt;/strong&gt; of the level producing no observable effect. Exceeding it is not a finding that harm
occurs.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The lead figure has a stranger history still. As documented in a California Court of Appeal opinion,
the 0.5 µg/day lead MADL was derived by taking an &lt;strong&gt;occupational airborne exposure limit&lt;/strong&gt;,
multiplying by the air a worker breathes in a shift, and dividing by 1,000 — then applying the
result as an oral daily dose. It was adopted in 1989. Whatever else it is, it is not a dietary
no-effect threshold.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;What later work found&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A 2024 peer-reviewed analysis of 72 dark chocolate and cocoa products found 43% exceeded the Prop 65
lead MADL and 35% the cadmium MADL — but &lt;strong&gt;97.2% fell below the FDA's Interim Reference Level for

outlier products. The authors described the MADLs as "conservative" and concluded contamination "may

&lt;h2&gt;Where we land&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A toxicologist at Johns Hopkins offered the most useful framing: "The safety levels for lead and
cadmium are set to be very protective, and going above them by a modest amount isn't something to be
concerned about." He added that a diet with adequate calcium and iron reduces absorption of both
metals.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The measurements are real and worth acting on at the margins — some bars are consistently lower, and
choosing them costs nothing. The panic that "dark chocolate is poisoning you" is not supported by

            &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;Shriners Children's has now warned about this trend twice, a year apart, which
is the part worth paying attention to.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Why this is a burn story and not a food story&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The mechanism deserves stating plainly, because "candied fruit" sounds harmless in a way that molten
sugar at 350°F is not. Three properties compound: sugar reaches temperatures far above boiling
water; it has a high heat capacity, so it holds that energy; and it is viscous, so it adheres to skin
instead of running off. Small contact areas produce deep burns.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The microwave is what turns a traditional confection into an emergency-department trend. A saucepan
on a hob is watched. A mug of sugar syrup in a microwave gets lifted by a child, in a container that
may be melting, or made of glass that shatters when it meets a cold counter.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;h2&gt;Dry chia seeds — "internal shower" drinks&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The injury:&lt;/strong&gt; complete oesophageal obstruction requiring emergency endoscopy.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Mechanism:&lt;/strong&gt; chia seeds form a cohesive gel when hydrated. Swallowed dry and chased with water,
they expand &lt;em&gt;inside&lt;/em&gt; the oesophagus rather than in the glass. In a documented case, a 39-year-old
man swallowed about a tablespoon dry, followed by water; the gel wedged at a narrowing and defeated
standard extraction — neither solid enough to grasp nor liquid enough to suction. The team worked
for several hours, eventually using a neonatal endoscope.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The gastroenterologist's advice is the whole lesson: "Nobody should be eating these seeds dry. Let
them expand fully in some kind of liquid first."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;An honest caveat:&lt;/strong&gt; that case dates from &lt;strong&gt;2014&lt;/strong&gt;, and the "internal shower" trend emerged around
2022. The case demonstrates the mechanism the trend can trigger. It was not caused by it, and we are
not going to imply otherwise.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Borax&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The injury:&lt;/strong&gt; nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and rash; with heavier exposure, anaemia,
seizures and kidney damage.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Mechanism:&lt;/strong&gt; borax hydrolyses in stomach acid to boric acid, which irritates the gut directly and
is cleared almost entirely by the kidneys, where it concentrates. It is classified in the EU as a
reproductive toxin.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;h2&gt;Capsaicin — the One Chip Challenge&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The injury:&lt;/strong&gt; in September 2023, the death of Harris Wolobah, aged 14.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Mechanism:&lt;/strong&gt; extreme capsaicin concentrations cause severe pain and forceful repeated vomiting
alongside a sympathetic surge — chest pain, palpitations, hypertension, coronary vasospasm. The
medical examiner recorded cardiopulmonary arrest following ingestion of a food substance with high
capsaicin concentration. The autopsy also found an enlarged heart and a congenital heart defect.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That last detail is important and is usually dropped. The chip did not need to be lethal to a
typical teenager to have been lethal to this one — which is exactly the problem with a challenge
administered at scale to strangers.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Dry scooping pre-workout powder&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The injury:&lt;/strong&gt; choking and powder aspiration; in one published case, a heart attack.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Mechanism:&lt;/strong&gt; swallowing concentrated stimulant powder undiluted delivers the full dose as a rapid
bolus. A case report describes a previously healthy 25-year-old man with thrombotic occlusion of the
proximal left anterior descending artery — and angiography showing no atherosclerosis and no
dissection. A clean artery, closed by a clot.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;What the pattern says&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;None of these trends is about what food does inside the body over years, which is what nutrition
argument usually concerns. They are about a technique applied to an ordinary ingredient: sugar
heated past its hard-crack stage, a blade without its guard, a hydrocolloid hydrating in the wrong
place, a stimulant taken undiluted.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That may be why they spread so well. The visual payoff is immediate — the shattering sugar shell,

&lt;h2&gt;July 2024 — two studies, routinely conflated&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Two research letters appeared in the &lt;em&gt;New England Journal of Medicine&lt;/em&gt; on the same day, and they
are not the same study.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A NIAID-led team found the half-life of infectious virus in raw milk at 63°C was &lt;strong&gt;4.5 seconds&lt;/strong&gt;,
with a 10^10-fold reduction within 2.5 minutes. A University of Wisconsin–Madison team fed mice raw
milk from an infected herd and infected them; they found 63°C inactivated the virus at all
intervals, while 72°C for 15–20 seconds reduced but did not always fully inactivate it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That second result is the one that circulates as "pasteurization doesn't work." Its authors
cautioned that their spiked-milk laboratory conditions do not reproduce the turbulent flow of
commercial pasteurizers.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The measurement that settles it&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The FDA tested &lt;strong&gt;297 retail dairy samples&lt;/strong&gt;. About 20% carried detectable influenza A &lt;strong&gt;RNA&lt;/strong&gt;. None
contained &lt;strong&gt;viable virus&lt;/strong&gt;, confirmed by egg inoculation.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This distinction matters because the RNA finding is itself frequently reported as alarming. Genetic
fragments of an inactivated virus are precisely what you would expect to find downstream of
pasteurization that worked.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;November–December 2024 — California&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;24 November:&lt;/strong&gt; California detected H5N1 in a retail sample of Raw Farm cream-top whole milk,
prompting a voluntary recall of one lot. &lt;strong&gt;27 November:&lt;/strong&gt; a second lot. &lt;strong&gt;3 December:&lt;/strong&gt; a broad
recall of all Raw Farm raw whole milk and cream produced 9–27 November, after the virus was found
at both retail and the dairy's own storage and bottling sites. The California Department of Food
and Agriculture placed the farm under quarantine.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;No human cases were linked to the recalled product.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Where things stand&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The CDC counts &lt;strong&gt;71 human A(H5) cases&lt;/strong&gt; in the United States since February 2024, with two deaths —
overwhelmingly among people with direct exposure to infected dairy herds or poultry. There is &lt;strong&gt;no
known person-to-person transmission&lt;/strong&gt;, and the assessed public health risk remains &lt;strong&gt;low&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In December 2025, a Wisconsin dairy herd detection was sequenced as genotype D1.1 — a &lt;strong&gt;new
spillover from wildlife&lt;/strong&gt;, distinct from the B3.13 genotype behind most dairy cattle cases. The
route from wild birds into cattle is not closed.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;A number we are not going to give you&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You will see it reported that raw milk sales surged 65% after the outbreak news. What the source
actually says is that weekly sales rose "21% to as much as 65%" year-over-year in May 2024 — a
range, reported as its own maximum.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It is also a range on a very small base. That same reporting notes roughly 4,100 units of raw cow's
milk sold in a week against about 66.5 million units of pasteurized milk. And it is from May 2024,
which is before the recalls, though it gets recycled as though it were current.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There may well be a real story about defiance driving raw milk consumption. This statistic is too
weak to carry it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

nutrition, and its own internal logic. That last one is the interesting part, so we will spend most
of our time there.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The safety question is not close&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Between 1998 and 2018, the FDA counts &lt;strong&gt;202 outbreaks&lt;/strong&gt; linked to drinking raw milk, causing
&lt;strong&gt;2,645 illnesses and 228 hospitalizations&lt;/strong&gt;. A peer-reviewed analysis of 2013–2018 found 75
outbreaks and 675 illnesses, of which &lt;strong&gt;48% were in people aged 0–19&lt;/strong&gt; — this is disproportionately
a children's illness.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The number that matters most is a modelling study in &lt;em&gt;Emerging Infectious Diseases&lt;/em&gt;. Raw milk
drinkers are a small slice of the population — about 3.2% for milk, 1.6% for cheese — but per unit
consumed they are &lt;strong&gt;roughly 840 times more likely to get an outbreak-related illness&lt;/strong&gt; and &lt;strong&gt;45
times more likely to be hospitalized&lt;/strong&gt; than people drinking pasteurized dairy.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;That figure is a model, not a headcount, and it covers four pathogens. It is also so large that
the modelling assumptions would have to be catastrophically wrong to change the conclusion.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;One honest caveat, since raw milk advocates raise it and they are right to:&lt;/em&gt; the same paper found
&lt;em&gt;Listeria&lt;/em&gt; illnesses were more often associated with &lt;strong&gt;pasteurized&lt;/strong&gt; cheese. That reflects
contamination after pasteurization, and amounts to roughly one additional illness a year. It does
not offset an 840-fold ratio.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The nutrition question isn't close either&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The claim is that heat destroys milk's nutritional value. Measured, it mostly doesn't.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Protein digestibility is 80.2% raw versus 80.0% pasteurized — a rounding error. Calcium absorption
and bone deposition show no difference between raw, HTST and UHT milk. Fat composition is
essentially unaffected. Bovine IgG is heat-stable enough that standard pasteurization denatures
about 1% of it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The one genuinely heat-sensitive nutrient is vitamin C, reduced by around 15%. Milk contains about
5 mg per cup — it is not a meaningful source of vitamin C either way. One study found vitamin C
actually keeps &lt;em&gt;better&lt;/em&gt; during storage in heated milk.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Now the enzymes, which is where the claim eats itself&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This is the argument's centrepiece: pasteurization destroys living enzymes. Follow it through and
it collapses in four separate places.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The main enzyme survives anyway.&lt;/strong&gt; Plasmin, milk's principal proteolytic enzyme, is heat-stable.
A large proportion survives pasteurization — and 30–40% of its activity survives even UHT
treatment, which is far harsher.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The enzyme that is destroyed does nothing for you.&lt;/strong&gt; Pasteurization does inactivate lipoprotein
lipase. Lipoprotein lipase has no role in human digestion of milk fat; your own gastric and
pancreatic lipases do that job. Its destruction is actually desirable, because residual activity
turns milk rancid.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Enzymes are proteins, and you digest proteins.&lt;/strong&gt; Any enzyme that did survive into your stomach
meets acid and proteases and is denatured and broken down, exactly like every other protein you
eat. This is the part of the argument that requires forgetting how digestion works.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The enzyme that would genuinely help isn't in cow's milk at all.&lt;/strong&gt; Bile-salt stimulated lipase
meaningfully aids fat absorption — and it is a human-milk enzyme, absent from bovine milk. There is
also no lactase in milk, so raw milk cannot relieve lactose intolerance.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And a detail that inverts the whole frame: high enzyme activity in raw milk is a &lt;strong&gt;warning sign&lt;/strong&gt;.
Elevated protease activity indicates either mastitis — milk from an infected udder — or bacterial
counts in the millions per millilitre.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;"Beneficial bacteria"&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Probiotics are, by definition, non-pathogenic organisms of human origin. The bacteria in raw milk
arrive from infected udder tissue, soil, water, cow manure and milking equipment. They are not
probiotic, and their presence is not a feature.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The FDA's note on bifidobacteria is the cleanest version of this: properly collected raw milk
&lt;em&gt;should not contain them&lt;/em&gt;, because their presence indicates faecal contamination.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;And then bird flu happened&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Since March 2024, H5N1 has been circulating in US dairy cattle, and infected cows shed enormous
quantities of virus into milk — titres up to 10^8.8 TCID50 per millilitre. Refrigeration preserves
it: the virus's half-life in raw milk is about 2.1 days at 4°C.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In November and December 2024, California regulators found H5N1 in retail raw milk, and Raw Farm
LLC recalled its raw whole milk and cream, with the farm placed under quarantine.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Pasteurization inactivates it. Infectious virus has a half-life of &lt;strong&gt;4.5 seconds at 63°C&lt;/strong&gt;. The
strongest real-world evidence is the FDA's retail survey: of 297 samples, 20% carried detectable

"raises your blood sugar as much as drinking a Coke." The line travelled, and oat milk — a decade
into being the default flat-white milk — acquired a reputation as a metabolic wolf in sustainable
clothing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There is a real mechanism underneath this. There is also a conclusion that the mechanism does not
support, and — more interestingly — a measurement nobody appears to have made.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The mechanism is real, and it is the entire point of the product&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Oat milk is sweet without added sugar because manufacturers use enzymes to break the oats' starch
into shorter sugars, chiefly maltose. That is not a contaminant or a scandal; it is how you get a
pourable, mildly sweet liquid out of a grain. It also means "no added sugar" and "not much sugar"
are different statements, and the label only promises the first.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Where the numbers come from, and how far they stretch&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Maltose does have a glycemic index of 105 — higher than glucose. That figure comes from the
&lt;em&gt;International table of glycemic index and glycemic load values&lt;/em&gt;, and it deserves its footnote: it
is a single study, in &lt;strong&gt;six people&lt;/strong&gt;, using 50 g of pure maltose.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Pure maltose in a lab is not a carton of oat milk. When the actual product is measured, it lands
considerably lower. The Glycemic Index Foundation lists oat milk at &lt;strong&gt;69&lt;/strong&gt;, against roughly 30 for
dairy milk. A separate laboratory analysis of 17 commercial plant milks found an oat drink that was
"mainly maltose" nonetheless produced a moderate predicted GI of &lt;strong&gt;59&lt;/strong&gt; — and noted, in passing,
that the genuinely high-GI plant milk is rice milk, at 97 to 100. Rice milk never trends.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So oat milk does sit at the higher end of the plant-milk range. It is roughly twice dairy milk. It
is not maltose, and the 105 figure does not belong in this conversation.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The comparison to Coke is arithmetically true and practically empty&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Coca-Cola's GI is about 60. Oat milk's is about 69. On that basis the viral claim is, narrowly,
correct.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Glycemic index compares &lt;strong&gt;equal quantities of available carbohydrate&lt;/strong&gt;, not equal servings. An
8 oz serving of oat milk contains around 7 g of sugar, alongside fat, protein and a little fibre.
A 12 oz Coke contains 39 g of sugar and nothing else. Per glass, Coke delivers over five times the
sugar load.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;"Higher GI" and "worse for your blood sugar in practice" are separate claims. The viral version
depends entirely on readers not noticing the difference. And a 30 ml splash in a coffee — the way
most oat milk is actually consumed — carries about 2 g of carbohydrate.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The measurement nobody has taken&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Here is the part that surprised us, and the reason this piece is graded C rather than D.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We could not find a single human randomised trial measuring the postprandial glucose response to
commercial oat milk against dairy milk. Not one. There is a large literature on oats and oat
beta-glucan in solid form, studies of beta-glucan beverages, and the in vitro work above — but the
retail product in a normal serving appears not to have been directly tested in people.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Which means the confident claim and the confident rebuttal are both running ahead of the evidence.
Anyone telling you precisely what oat milk does to your blood sugar relative to dairy is
extrapolating. We are not going to pretend otherwise in order to deliver a cleaner verdict.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The criticism that would have worked&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If you wanted to make a serious nutritional case against oat milk, the sugar is not it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Protein.&lt;/strong&gt; An audit of 129 plant-based milk products found oat milk at about 1.0 g protein per
100 ml, against 3.6 g for cow's milk and 3.2 g for soy. If you are drinking plant milk for
nutrition rather than ethics or taste, soy is the better-evidenced swap.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The health halo.&lt;/strong&gt; Oat milk borrows oats' cholesterol-lowering reputation, which rests on

challenge" asks you to stir a pinch of sodium borate — laundry booster — into a glass of water
and drink it, daily, for arthritis, inflammation, hormones, and brain fog.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It is worth understanding why this one persuades people, because it is not simply made up. It is
built on a real distinction, stretched past breaking.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;Boron is real. Borax is not boron.&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Boron is a trace element found in grapes, potatoes, nuts and legumes. There is a genuine, if
modest, scientific literature on it. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements is direct about where
that literature stands: boron "is not classified as an essential nutrient for humans because
research has not yet identified a clear biological function for boron." Typical dietary intake is
about 1 to 1.5 mg per day, and the Tolerable Upper Intake Level for adults is &lt;strong&gt;20 mg per day&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Borax is not a boron supplement. It is sodium tetraborate decahydrate, sold to whiten laundry.
The claim's persuasive trick is to treat those two as interchangeable — to reason that because
boron appears in food, a boron-containing cleaning compound must be food.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Liz Weinandy, a registered dietitian at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, put the
distinction plainly to PolitiFact: "Ingesting borax isn't the same as ingesting boron from food or
supplements, and eating or drinking borax is dangerous."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The arthritis study everyone is standing on&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Trace the arthritis claim back far enough and it lands on one paper: Rex Newnham's 1994 article in
&lt;em&gt;Environmental Health Perspectives&lt;/em&gt;, which reported that in a double-blind trial, 50% of subjects
taking a boron supplement improved versus 10% on placebo.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Two facts about that trial are usually left out. It enrolled &lt;strong&gt;20 people&lt;/strong&gt;. And it tested &lt;strong&gt;6 mg of
boron per day&lt;/strong&gt; — comfortably below the 20 mg upper limit, and nothing like a spoonful of laundry
powder.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The NIH's current assessment of the whole field is that boron, "particularly as calcium
fructoborate, might hold promise for reducing osteoarthritis symptoms, but confirmation is needed."
That is a fair description of a thin, unfinished evidence base. It is not a basis for drinking
detergent.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;What ingesting borax actually does&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The National Capital Poison Center: swallowed in significant quantities, boric acid "can be toxic
and cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and in more severe cases,
kidney damage and seizures." Long-term exposure "can potentially cause damage to the testes,
endocrine system, and a developing fetus." Their instruction is one sentence: "Do not ingest boric
acid or inhale the powder."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The National Pesticide Information Center describes chronic ingestion progressing to "headaches,
fever, tremors, twitching, a lack of energy, and weakness," and severe cases causing "coma,
seizures, the halting of blood circulation, liver and kidney dysfunction, a low red blood cell
count and death." In the European Union, borax is classified as a reproductive toxin.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The American College of Medical Toxicology's verdict on the trend is a single sentence: "There is
no evidence that swallowing borax has any human health benefits."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;The dose is not subtle&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Borax decahydrate is roughly 11% boron by mass. An eighth of a teaspoon — about 0.6 g, a plausible
reading of "a pinch" — therefore delivers somewhere near &lt;strong&gt;65 mg of boron&lt;/strong&gt;, around three times the
NIH upper limit and roughly fifty times typical dietary intake, in one glass.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;(That figure is our own arithmetic from the compound's formula, not a published measurement. No
source we could find specifies a standard dose for this trend, because there isn't one — the
recipes say "a pinch.")&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;One more thing, since we are being careful&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;While checking this claim we kept meeting confident statistics on the &lt;em&gt;debunking&lt;/em&gt; side that do not
exist: a "200% spike in poison control calls," a study of "150 borax-related emergency department
visits," an ACMT report documenting "50 US exposures, up 300%." We opened the ACMT statement. It
contains no case counts at all. Those numbers appear to originate from AI-generated content farms.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;What a toxicologist actually said is less quotable and more honest. Dr. Kelly Johnson-Arbor of the
National Capital Poison Center told PolitiFact her center had seen an increase in borax and boric
acid exposures compared with the previous year — no percentage, no total.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Being right about borax does not entitle anyone to invent numbers. That includes people arguing
our side.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
