On 28 August 2026, The Times published Michael Odell's first-person account of four weeks on "the reset," a programme by the nutritionist Rose Ferguson, sold alongside her book:

By the end he sleeps better, has more energy and is less irritable, and there is no reason to doubt it. What is graded here is not whether he felt better, but the explanation he is given for why:
She recommends a complete reboot of my biome and metabolism
"Your digestion can become exhausted if it's overworked and not used to being flexible"
"Your body is doing a deep-clean. It's a process called autophagy, which means old or damaged cellular material is being recycled."
Three mechanisms: a rebooted microbiome, a rested digestion, a week-two autophagy deep-clean. They are the intellectual content of the product, and the parts the evidence will not carry.
Sixteen changes, no measurement
Week one: no alcohol, a 12-hour eating window, a 10pm bedtime, morning daylight, and ten minutes of meditation, journalling, movement and breathwork. Week two adds 18:6 fasting, a liquid-only day, a daily tablespoon of fermented food, a step target, two strength sessions, and the removal of eggs, nightshades, dairy, gluten, added sugar, sweeteners, dried fruit and refined seed oils. Week three reintroduces those foods 48 hours apart; week four settles back to 12:12.
That is more than a dozen simultaneous interventions in one person, with no control, no blinding, and no measurement of any kind — no weight, no bloods, no stool sample — in a subject told in advance that he will feel ten years younger. Several of the changes would improve a 62-year-old's sleep and energy on their own: stopping drinking, an earlier bedtime, daylight, walking, strength training, more vegetables, fewer ultra-processed foods. All are defensible; none is what the reader is told is responsible. The one thing an uncontrolled n=1 with sixteen variables cannot tell you is which variable worked.
The reboot reverts in two days
David and colleagues, in Nature in 2014, put ten adults on five days of an entirely animal-based or entirely plant-based diet. Community structure shifted within a day of the food reaching the distal gut — diet really does move the microbiome, fast. Then: "Subjects' gut microbiota reverted to their original structure 2 days after the animal-based diet ended."
The microbiome tracks what you are eating now, so a change to it lasts as long as the eating does. Alpha-diversity did not significantly change on either diet. Ten people is a small study, but it is the direct answer to a durability claim, and it points the other way.
Fermented food is the good part, at eight times the dose
Wastyk and colleagues, in Cell in 2021, ran a 17-week protocol in healthy adults (mean age 51) with a 10-week diet intervention; 39 assigned, final analysis n=18 per arm. The fermented-food arm showed steadily increasing microbiota diversity and a significant decrease in 19 inflammatory serum markers, including IL-6. That is real randomised evidence, and Ferguson is entitled to it.
Three caveats travel with it. The primary outcome, a cytokine response score, was not significant in either arm; the diversity and inflammation results are secondary and exploratory, as the authors state. The dose reached 6.3 ± 2.9 servings a day, from 0.4 at baseline; the reset asks for a tablespoon. And the fermented arm reported significantly more bloating during ramp-up, which later resolved. The trial's high-fibre arm roughly doubled fibre intake and its diversity did not change.
An exhausted digestion, and a deep-clean nobody measured
No source is offered for digestion becoming "exhausted" and needing rest, and none was assessed here — it is a metaphor, not a claim with a literature. What can be tested is the implied payoff, that compressing when you eat delivers a metabolic benefit. Lowe and colleagues, in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2020, randomised 116 adults to 16:8 time-restricted eating or three structured meals a day for 12 weeks. Weight loss was 0.94 kg against 0.68 kg, no significant difference (p=0.63), and none in fat mass, fasting glucose, insulin, HbA1c or lipids either. Their conclusion: "Time-restricted eating, in the absence of other interventions, is not more effective in weight loss than eating throughout the day."
That is not a finding of harm, and it tested 16:8 for twelve weeks, not one week of 18:6. But one result deserves an older reader's attention: appendicular lean mass index fell significantly in the fasting arm (between-group difference −0.16 kg/m², p=0.005), and roughly 65% of the weight lost was fat-free mass, against an expected 20 to 30%. The authors could not rule out low protein intake as the cause, having not measured it.
Then the deep-clean. Autophagy is real and Nobel-recognised; the claim being graded is that it switched on in this man in week two. The best human evidence is Bensalem and colleagues in the Journal of Physiology in 2025, whose abstract concedes the point: "Autophagy slows age-related pathologies and is stimulated by nutrient restriction in animal studies. However, this has never been shown in humans." Their prespecified exploratory sub-study covered 121 adults with obesity, mean age 58, over six months, using a blood assay they had to build because no method existed, and a fasting arm far more severe than a week of 18:6. At two months, no significant between-group difference; at six, one between fasting and standard care at P = 0.04, post hoc. Their summary: "there was no significant increase from baseline within the iTRE group, showing that although autophagy may be modified by nutrient restriction in humans, further studies are required." Nothing was measured in Odell's week two at all.
Removing four food groups on a magazine's advice
The elimination-and-reintroduction phase makes the reader their own unblinded diagnostician. The British Dietetic Association says such restriction "may increase the risk of nutritional deficiencies, especially without support from a qualified healthcare professional," that elimination and reintroduction should be supervised by a registered dietitian, and that excluding wheat and dairy is "unnecessary and potentially harmful" when the nutrients are not replaced. It also limits juices and smoothies to 150 ml a day because of free sugars — awkward for a liquid-only day.
On nightshades, Colorado State University's Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center is blunt: "There is no conclusive research that draws the link between nightshade consumption and increased inflammation." The Cleveland Clinic agrees, endorsing supervised trial elimination only for people with inflammatory or autoimmune conditions — not for a healthy 62-year-old dropping tomatoes because a book said to. Nor can the reintroduction test work as advertised: a man just told these foods are suspect, eating them back one at a time and logging how he feels, cannot distinguish an intolerance from an expectation.
What the article gets right
Its most checkable claim checks out. The piece says the UK chief medical officer "earlier this year published further evidence that even the smallest movements can deliver significant physical and mental benefits." The refreshed UK CMO guidelines were published on 10 July 2026, emphasising light-intensity activity, less prolonged sitting, and strength and balance work; Chris Whitty is quoted saying "even small amounts of physical activity produce important benefits compared to none." The article misspells his surname and calls guidance "evidence," but the substance is right — and the reset's own prescription meets the guidelines' 150 minutes a week plus strength work on two days.
Ferguson's closing advice is the best thing in the piece, and it quietly contradicts the framing: permanent habits, three meals, more plants, don't underfuel, and "Consistency beats intensity. If you eat ice cream or drink a bottle of wine, that's OK. It's not a competition." That is the opposite of a reset, and the part that would hold up.
None of this assesses Rose Ferguson's competence — her training was not verified either way here, and nothing above depends on it. The point is structural. Per the BDA, "Dietitians are the only nutrition profession with statutory (legal) regulation," while "nutritionist" is "not legally or voluntary regulated" and "anyone could use" the title. So "leading nutritionist" is a description a newspaper chose, not a credential a regulator granted.
Why this is a D
Not an E. The instructions are largely good, several claims in the piece are correct, and a reader who follows the programme will probably feel better. The article is not lying about that.
Not a C either, because the evidence on the central question is not split. That question is attribution. The microbiome reboot reverts in two days. The exhausted digestion has no source, and a compressed eating window showed no metabolic advantage in a 116-person trial. The deep-clean was never measured, and has never been shown from baseline even in a six-month study built to measure it. Meanwhile everything plausibly producing the effect — no alcohol, more sleep, more steps, strength work, fewer ultra-processed foods, morning daylight — is bundled in and credited to the brand. A real set of improvements, framed to produce a false impression about their cause. That is a D.
